My cub story

This is the story of how I got my cub. It is pretty special to me and I thought you guys might enjoy it. Please re-direct me if I posted this in the wrong section.

The last couple years of my life have been pretty hectic, but last night made me realize I have it pretty good. To backtrack a little, my fiancé Kelsey and I have been dating for almost three years and things couldn’t be better. In the last 24 months both of us graduated from the university where we met, and got new jobs. Since we started dating, I have drug her along to all of the motorcycle and tractor shows that were local, and told her how much I wanted a cub some day. To my surprise she actually likes going to the shows. After graduation, we moved into a small 500 sq.ft. apartment together that was very cramped. A year ago, almost to the day, a house that we both loved came up for sale. After jumping through all of the bank’s hoops, we ended up buying the house, it was a stressful time to say the least.
After moving into the house we quickly came to the realization that we didn’t have much in terms of “tools” and other items to keep the house up. I didn’t even have a shovel, let alone a lawn mower. By this time it was almost October and I decided to wait on a mower until spring, and to buy up all the smaller tools needed in the meantime. Winter came and went and before I knew it spring was knocking on my door, and it would soon be time to look for a mower . I knew things were tight moneywise since I had secretly been putting money away from each paycheck to buy an engagement ring for kelsey. At the beginning of march I proposed to Kelsey and a tractor was the last thing on my mind.
Another month passed and I decided it was time to start looking for a tractor. Since I used most of my “fortune” on a ring for Kelsey, I had planned on buying a junker riding mower to get me through the year. I started searching craigslist and was coming up blank. Everything was either a total wreck or out of the budget. The entire time (weeks) I was looking, Kelsey pretty much kept quiet and didn’t say much. I was becoming quite frantic and frustrated because I couldn’t find anything that would fit our needs. One day, while sitting at work, I got an email from Kelsey. The subject line read, “pick one”. I opened the email and inside there were three craigslist links to Farmall Cubs. I was kind of confused because I knew that we couldn’t afford one, so I called her on my lunch break. It turns out that she had been secretly saving money for a cub at the same time I was saving money for a ring, and she told me that we had the money for any of the 3 cubs in the ads, and that I could pick which one I wanted. To say the least I was very happy and surprised.
I ended up buying a 1950 cub, which Kelsey and I both agreed looked like a “Gertrude”. I have used the cub every week this summer for mowing and it has never let me down. I love tinkering with it. Last night Kelsey mentioned that we need to get our engagement pictures taken soon since the wedding is next May. She then said that she wanted some taken of us on the cub and in front of the old barn behind our house. I was pleasantly surprised. I never expected to find a woman who puts up with me, and likes the same old stuff I do. I think in a way the little Cub made us closer , and that’s something I will never forget.

Hi all, Thanks for the kind words.

Ken: the mower is a woods 42. I know its actually a brush hog type, but it does a nice job on my lawn too.

The words Wow, Fairy Tale come to mind! Better take good care of both of them. Btw the 42 inch mower is probably a better fit for your tractor. Smaller mower equals more seat time, lol! Have you let her drive it yet?

Great story Scott, like the others said, you gotta hang on to that lady.

Since you both enjoy Cubs, you should plan to attend CI CubFest in Tipton Indiana September 20th and 21st. There is a lot of Cub knowledge spread around, along with repairs and possible plowing depending if the crops have been harvested. Many of us from the forum will be camping or getting a hotel room so we can be there for both days. I'm sure you both would enjoy the time spent.
