Starting over

I have been pretty absent on the forum for a while now. I have had lots of things going on in my life. The job I currently have has been a strain on my home life to say the least. I am a lower level manager at an office supply warehouse. I basically run the day to day operations in one of the three departments in an office supply warehouse for a Fortune 500 company. It is basically a permanent evening shift position. This has been a huge strain on my marriage and my relationship with my children. Most days I don't see my wife at all, I see my son for roughly 20 minutes as I am trying to get him ready to catch the school bus, and a have my daughter for a few hours before I have to get ready to leave for work. All of these factors and the declining atmosphere in the workplace lead me to seek employment elsewhere. I have been offered an entry level position in a manufacturing plant just across the railroad tracks from my current job. The pay is good (after 18 months I will be making more than my current pay after almost 14 years), the environment is awesome, but it is swing shift. Some may look at that as a drawback, but I will be home with the family 4 out of 6 weeks(2 weeks of each of the 3 shifts). It will be a definite bonus for me. The hardest thing for me will be to go from 28 days off down to 1 for the rest of this year. I am eager and anxious to get started. My plan is to give my notice to my current employer tomorrow and move to my new employer on the 15th or 16th(depending on the orientation schedule). It will be harder to get to cub fests for a year or two, but I will get to be a part of my family again.

Don't feel like you are alone, Chad. We had a guy at work give up a foreman job in the plant because of the overtime and the shifts. He took a janitor job in the office because it was all day shift, 8 hours a day and off on all the holidays. Big cut in pay, but big increase in family time.

Chad,

Family comes first, the rest will work out.

Best of luck to you and Tasha as you venture down a new path!

Chad:

After almost 6 decades of breathin, I have come to the unassailable conclusion that the only thing that matters in this life really and truly is family. Our mates being Job #1 and our kids are our legacy. Everything else is basically smoke and mirrors. I retired from the military because of similar reasons and even though I missed it greatly, it was still the best decision for my family and me and one I do not regret. I applaud you on your courage to take the stand for your bride and children. I am pretty positive that making that choice was the right thing to do :!: Congratulations on the new job and glad that the family will see more of you.

Oh yeah, right after mate and family comes the rest of the family and friends. Extended family and friends will definitely understand that the focus of your life right now has to be your bride and your children. Good on ya :!:

Good Luck Chad. Like others have said, family time is very precious. I have been self=employed since 2010 after losing my job due to a comp claim and age. I'm not getting rich by any means, but I've been able to spend more time with my wife and grandkids than ever before. Enjoy this opportunity. John

Glad to hear you're making a change; sounds like for the better in the long run. Hope your new job is less stressful and provides you with the quality time you're looking for with your wife and children.

I've been wondering where you went. Thanks for sharing with us.

Change is tough... but having met your wonderful family I am certain it is worth it. The swing shift part is going to take some getting used to, but it will all work out.

Best of luck on the new job.

good move, Chad, I worked shift work for a few years before going into management and I enjoyed the irregular time off because when you are on night shift you can visit the kids in school, go to their plays and activities, etc. without taking a day off.
