Well DARN!!! Here we go again...CHRISTMAS UPDATE!
Hey friends,
I've waited a week to share the news that I've lost my job again, and it looks like it might be for good.
Although my feeling this time around is more one of relief than anything else, (they've had a target on me and many others all year); it kind of stinks that after over 9 years with the company they decided to cut the ties just a few months shy of my vesting for access to retirement healthcare--a huge benefit they've made sure I won't get.
So at 56 years old, I'm joining many other good folks who have been forced to reassess their careers and redefine--not a bad process, just not as much fun as working for an organization who appreciates you for who you are, what you can do for them and their customers, and what you can do for your co-workers. This economy has changed many companies, but I'll find one who still upholds these values.
This time around rather than feeling sorry for myself, (well, maybe I did for a day or so! ), I decided to focus on others, and that has helped. Last week I went out and adopted a beautiful German Shepard puppy who had been confiscated in a drug raid and given to a regional pet rescue organization. Meet Ellie, who at 7-1/2 months old is already 48 pounds of sweet intelligent puppy:
So far this week I've played (poorly! ) in a charity golf tournament and helped Jeanine judge a chili cookoff at the local civic center. While I would like to find work in my hometown rather than commuting to Atlanta again, if that's not possible, I at least want to get more connected here, and the activities will help.
I'll keep you guys updated as things progress, and thanks in advance for good thoughts.
Corky

I found this old Cub, Forgotten and Forlorn,
With pistons and valves frozen and worn.
Help from my buddies on Farmallcub.com,
And an engine from Ralph, (37’s the one),
Now ole Corky is running and back to life,
Much to the surprise of my dear, dear wife!

Charles, I know you'll bounce back and find the right fit for you somewhere. Losing our benefits is one of the toughest things there is when we get to be our age. Hang in there and keep looking. Keep the faith.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Saddened to hear of your job loss, though I like hearing your attitude about it. Keep it positive. You'll find that company out there--they do exist.

Charles - sorry to hear this. But as the others have said - you can recover from this. I have no doubt in your ability to overcome.
Be sure to give Ellie lots of love, ear scratches and belly rubs.

Keep the faith Corky. There ought be a law against companies who do that sort of thing. Go to the library an get a copy of "A Dogs Purpose" You will enjoy reading it.

I've been thinking about this. I keep going back to this statement.

So at 56 years old . . .
I have to wonder if maybe there is a law. If the company has a pattern of giving the axe to older workers just before they have 10 years in, there is one. If you've seen something like that, I suggest a visit to the EEOC office.

I'm a step or two ahead of you my friends...looking into this already with an employment law attorney...stay tuned!
I sincerely appreciate these good thoughts, and will let you know what I learn. My company musta forgotten what ole Corky did before he joined them 9-2/3 years ago!

Boy... that really sucks.. and to do it just when you are coming up on retirement benefits that is low, really low. A company that does that has simply no respect for those who actually grow the company. Also, I know how difficult it is to be without benefits -- especially at our ages .. I sure hope that Jim is right and that you have that angle covered cause as others have said there ought to be a law. We will be pullin for you and for your family as you work through this. I am sure that He will help guide you and He does have something planned for you.
Now Ellie is something that will bring you lots of joy and peace for sure as you already know. What a gorgeous Shepherd
