Your description sounds like a 22-250. Good cartridge, as are the Savage rifles go to http://www.savagearms.com, click on customer support, and there is a section where you can downlad manuals.

Try a search for Remington Hornet. I think this is what you're looking for. It's very fast for a few yards

I have a little info: .22 Savage High-Power, introduced 1912, obsolete by 1930. Known as the 5.6X52MM rimmed in Europe.
It uses a 70 Gr. bullet and the cartridge is 2.510 inches long. Loading dies and info seem to still be available.
The ammo is collectable and sell for about $3.75 a piece.
Best,
Mike

DonnyM , Virginia Mike

I also have 3 vintage boxes of ammo I don't think they say anything about Remmington Hornet but will check tomarro as they are not here at my house yet.... I will post back the actual ammo specs.....

Thanks all I do appreciate

the Savage site has changed a lot since I last visited it aobut 3 or 4 months ago. It did ocntain information including parts lists for the older guns, but there were some changes mad in management in 1995 (buy out?). A lot of the info on the older stuff seems to have been deleted, really hate that. I have a 110 (30.06) that I fell in love with after I guy let me try it out.

Savage 99

Are you looking to buy one, I can offer a few tips on where to look. The 22 Highpower fired a 70 grain bullet at 2800 fps and used an unconventional .228 diameter as opposed to the normal .224 The rifle itself was offered in solid frame and takedown, with round, hex, or creedmoor style barrel. they were also offered in different grades from plain jane to very ornate. They bring a good chunk of change! Email me if you need more info.

No ,I had this one given to me I am just trying to gather info on it. I had thought that it was a very rare rifle because I had never seen a 22 with center fire and very large coke bottle shape shell.. This 99 is lever action somewhat ornate and the forward stock is removeable by pressing a spring loaded button/lever slide, local gun shop sells ammo for it he also advised me not to restor it as it would kill the value and the presnt condition is some what decent yet showing its age...

Thanks for the info..... Jack

Sounds like a take-down model. Depending on condition, nice ones often bring aroun 1000.00. Enjoy it!

10 or a 1,000 dollars the $ value means little to me its all sentimental as it was my fathers gun when he was a teenager in the 30s.... I have been rubbing it down with a gun cleaning solvent the stocks are coming out real nice and same for the barrel but on the metal sides there is surface rust its not coming off at all, I may try Navel jelly as a last resort..... I can't wait to shoot this 22 it has to have more kick and a differant sound than the standard 22, I am also anxsious to see how accurate it is since target shooting is my intrest........

Thanks all Jack

Don't use Navel jelly, it will remove the blueing. saturate the area with WD40 or the oil of your choice and scrub with a brass brush.
Best,
Mike

You could always reblue the barrel if the rust is too widespread.

Any refinishing reduces value.
