Are people this stupid?

Postby Scrivet » Fri Jan 01, 2016 7:19 pm

My brother told me yesterday about a breaking news report he saw. You know the ones where they interrupt the regularly scheduled programing. It was to warn you not to wade in raw sewage since some of the sewage treatment plants were now flooded and not treating sewage.

Today I heard a radio news report about the boil water order for a certain community. Followed by the statement "Let the water cool before drinking"

Well there goes my summer vacation plans of swimming at the sewage treatment plant and having a nice glass of refreshing boiling water. I'm glad somebody told me! :D

I heard an old George Carlin bit about warning labels on products. He said that Preparation H had a warning on it "not to take internally" because someone had written in and complained that they had swallowed a whole tube and still had hemorrhoids.

If a product has a warning label on it, it's probably because some fool, did what the warning advises against. (or, their legal department anticipated a problem)
My wood burnin stove is labelled, "Hot when in use". (That's what I expected)

A waitress in Kentucky said a tourist asked for KY jelly to put on his toast.

Remember the McDonald's coffee lady? She successfully sued McDonald's after she spilled hot coffee in her lap claiming that the hot coffee she ordered was hot.....

That case is an interesting study of how a story can get twisted. She did sue, but all she asked for was reimbursement for her actual out-of-pocket medical expenses. After the jury saw the long history of other incidents/complaints about excessively hot coffee at McDonald's (700 burn cases in 10 years), they decided that McDonald's management needed a stronger message and awarded punitive damages to get their attention.

She had spent 6 days in the hospital while getting skin grafts (full skin depth burns over 6% of her body) and asked McD for $20,000. The jury awarded a higher compensatory amount plus punitive damages, the total of which were reduced by the judge to less than 1/4 of the jury amount. Both sides appealed then settled for some undisclosed lesser amount.

McDonald's has changed to sturdier coffee cups. Reports differ on whether they have turned the coffee temperature down.

I only drink McDonald's coffee if I am desperate, but I do like the current coffee cups, and it is not as hot as it used to be. Before I had to let it set a while, now it is about the same temp as my drip coffeemaker and I can sip it right away. Sip, not chug, it is still to hot for that, which is the way coffee should be. My wife however could have drunk the original with no problems.
