Copperhead

Postby Lightning rod » Tue Jun 23, 2015 6:42 pm

Was picking beans in the garden today. I reached to grab a hoe propped up on the fence only to spot a copperhead coiled on the fence inches from my hand. Freaked me out so bad I tore the soles off my boots getting out of their. After talking myself out of burning the whole garden down I got a shotgun and killed it. Still haven't worked up the nerve to go get the beans though

Have done the same. The shotgun is just another useful tool.

Got bit on the ankle by one of them bad boys when I was six years old. Hated snakes for years after that happened. Killed every one I came across, poisonous or not. Now only the bad boys feel my wrath :-)

We have them around. Over the years, next door neighbor has run into two or three; I've never seen one at our place.

Just be aware that they're around and wear appropriate protection (boots, etc.) when you're in the garden. The shotgun is a useful tool as Bus Driver so aptly pointed out. Be careful.

I'm such a chicken when it comes to snakes that I've adopted the mantra " if it don't walk, it dies" at my house. I don't get close enough to check colors. I put holes in all of them

Folks in different parts of the country have different names for the same thing. Around here we call it rat shot. I use it in a 22 pistol. Works good.

The .22 is #12 shot and of necessity, relatively few of them. Effective only at close range. Bird shot is typically #7 1/2 or 8 and effective at longer ranges, perhaps as much as 300 feet.
