Great Start to Lawn Mowing Season

Postby PVF1799 » Tue May 05, 2015 6:00 am

Got the lawn mower already for spring this weekend. Changed the oil, sharpened the blade, greased the casters, etc. Enjoying the beautiful day - I set about to mow the lawn. This is same lawn I've been mowing since 1985, over the same humps, bumps and maple roots from the silver maple tree.

After about say 5 minutes or so - my mowing session came to an abrupt stop - literally. The freshly sharpened blade, hogged right into that same maple root I mowed over last year and many years before that. Engine stopped, would not restart. Upon further investigation - the blade is bent - no big deal right? You'd be right if it had not also bent the crank also :( .

No time to rebuild right now - off to get a new mower and do the crank this winter. Expensive day!

Things do seem to reposition over the winter sometimes. It seems I'm always "finding things" in the spring.. Sorry for the bad luck!

Sorry to hear that. Not everything in the Spring is coming up roses. Sometimes trees roots come up a little further too.

Frost heave definitely pushes those roots, rocks and other assorted goodies up a little each year.

Been skimming the roots of a silver maple for years, but finally cut it down last year. Was dying a little at a time and too close to the house to let it go. Not too mention that squirrels had moved into the holes and were also eating the vacuum lines on my truck which was parked only a few feet away.

Once you rebuild, go ahead and replace the blade. Don't try to bend it back. It only takes a little vibration from a blade that isn't perfect to wear out bearings prematurely. The blade doesn't cost enough to justify the extra hassle of bearing replacement

Tire pressures affect cutting height.

So many rock 'icebergs' up north that I can't possibly remember them all. On a Cub, a flail mower is my favorite.

Mowed the Advance Redoubt at the fort with the cheapest new mower I could find on Saturday.... thing works great and I didn't have to drive the Lo Boy there.
