Dumpster diving at it's best /worst

Postby Bezirk » Thu Apr 09, 2015 6:00 pm

Yes folks I have engaged in the practice of bringing home items retrieved fron the dumpster. Today I had a different experience at the trash receptacles , as I was attempting to dump my large plastic shop can it slipped out of my hands and went into the dumpster. I was very determined to retrieve it. My first thought, just hop up and down throw it back up and out and come back out. After more thought it became clear to me that getting out might not be as easy as getting into the dumpster. I got a rope from the truck tied it off securely and went into the dumpster emptied the barrel and threw it out. Getting out of the dumpster was very easy with my rope trick, however my only fear was that one of my neighbors would show up while I was in the dumpster and try to have me sent to the funny farm. that did not happenI made a clean getaway, when I got home I told Paula of my adventure only after she promised not to laugh, so much for that promise !

Berlin, I think I would have tied the rope around the can, climbed on the can to get out, then pulled the can out with the rope. Try that next time. :D

That was not an option the only holes in the can are about 1/4" to allow me to use bungees to keep trash from blowing out when transporting. Me thinks I will cut two hand holds into the barrel so it won't get away from me next time also could use those to insert rope.

I've often said that there is no way I could be a trash man. I'd have to pull a trailer to haul all the stuff home that I couldn't believe someone was throwing out.

Dumpster diving is a routine occurrence around here. But, you are not allowed to get into the dumpster. So, everyone has long poles with hooks on the end. :D

I looked around for a pole, usually there is one there, however with only the small holes in the barrel it would not have worked anyway. I reviewed a lot of options before making my not so grand entrance into the dumpster. The compactor ram had been run just prior to me coming to the receptacle, that helped that I didn't have to stand on trash, but made the depth greater that I had to come back up out of the dumpster. One of my daughters asked if they have video monitoring,
I replied don't think so guess I'll find out.

After retiring the husband of a 2nd or 3rd cousin worked part time on a garbage truck at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

On back of the garbage truck was a container for soda bottles and cans, 5 cent deposit.

At cousin's house was an old trailer house filled with the frames of aluminum lawn chairs. Separate storage building filled with clothing, furniture, you name it, good stuff.

Sparmula Tag. (spelling). German for garbage day. Districts had different garbage pickup days. Day before the scheduled garbage pick up, Americans stationed in Germany would drive the districts looking for great trash. That's how we got a sofa, chairs, several dressers.
I have an excuse. CRS.
