Re: Where are the cardinals this year?
The squirrels like to dine on my Christmas light wires. I have to replace 8 to 10 strands a year due to them chomping on them They cut through them with a straight cut like a side cutter. I wish they would do it when the switch is on.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Sometimes populations fluctuate. This year brown creeper numbers are up…pileated woodpeckers seem to be up. TONS of snowshoe hares and ruffed grouse in the woods around my place. But no…no cardinals. And I haven't seen a monarch butterfly in 3 years. That last one concerns me. Sounds like their disappearance is on a North American scale and might possibly be linked to over-use of glyphosate.

Monarch butterfly populations can be significantly impacted by severe weather on their migrations to and from Mexico, and the weather in the mountains of Mexico where they winter. Not saying that pesticides might not be a contributing factor, though.

Yes. The articles I read also mentioned logging in Mexico that is destroying their winter habitat. Sounds like gly, habitat loss, and weather are part of a cocktail of problems wiping out the monarchs.

That is sad about the Monarch's. I saw a story about them vanishing and possibly being considered an endangered species.
BTW: We saw our first cardinals today. A pair. I guess we just needed a little bit of snow on the ground to entice them to the feeders

We had Monarchs during the summer. We grow dill for pickles and they like to lay eggs there. They are an easily spotted worm and can really eat dill. Glyphosphate really wouldn't hurt them I wouldn't think. It is a weed killer. Vern
Edit: Just found this in the news. Says roundup (glyphosphate) kills milkweed which is the Monarchs "only" food.

Yes, exactly Vern. The monarchs eat milkweed.
