Blacksmith plow points

Postby Rabbit Holler Flash » Tue Jun 24, 2014 8:37 pm

Scrivet and I were able to buy the Forge, anvil ,vice and old drill press from the estate auction of our cousin. These are the tools Grandpa and his brothers used on the farm in the early 1900's I am wanting to set up shop with them maybe even mount them on a trailer and use for demos at local events. This is not a business idea by along shot just always liked "beating hot iron", Ive been studying old manuals and howto info. Scrivet bought me for Christmas a cool dvd set of old reprints of early books on metal workin and blacksmithing. I remember watchin a local Blacksmith sharpen picks and mattocks for my moms step dad but never saw a plow point done. Has anyone watched plow point done? I know dad had points done but I never got to see it done. Do they have a template or jig to bring point to right shape and angle. Or was it kinda by trial and " that looks bout right"

I have watched it done a little, but not the whole process. The smith was an old Bohemian named Moshek, and he strictly worked from memory, or as you said, T.L.A.R. Other than the color, you thought it was a new one when he finished.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Unfortuneately, Cousin Lee was a fairly religous man so we didn't get our moneys' worth on the vice.
We did however get a pretty good deal on a nice postleg blacksmith VISE :D  :||):
(Cousin Pauline, the English teacher, would be so proud.......of one of us at least )
