Bird Feeding

Postby indy61 » Mon Feb 24, 2014 3:54 pm

I have always enjoyed watching the birds on my feeders and I get a great variety such as Indigo Bunting, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, etc. but it also attracts Chipmunks, Pine Squirrels, Coons, etc. The varmints have become a problem and this year the Pineys got in my attic and the Chipmunks and Coons are always tearing up the landscape beds . I'm thinking about not feeding them anymore, I can't seem to keep the varmints under control. :(

What are you feeding them? I seem to have good success just attracting the birds I like (cardinals, chickadees, titmouse, finches, nuthatch) by using strictly black oil sunflower seeds. I found that when I used a multi-variety seed (sunflower, millet, etc.), it drew the black birds, jays, house sparrows, and starlings. We've put us a suet feeder in the back of the house for the wood peckers and the sunflower feeder in front of the house for the rest.

I use a mixture that has a little of everything in it. When a Red-Bellied or even a Pialated woodpecker gets on them they dig for what they want and the rest goes to the ground. The varmints aren't picky.

Around here everybody likes the black oil sunflower seeds. I even have at least 1 cotton tail rabbit that likes them. I put out shelled corn for the rabbits and squirrels but that doesn't keep them from the seeds. Pretty much every kind of bird that we have in our area (except Robbins) feed on the seeds and most will eat some corn also. We even had a Ruffed Grouse at the corn dish a few times this winter. (we live in a small town)
