Road gear?

I believe it was a bolt on, and even with road gear was only about 6 mph. At the time these were made good gravel roads were rare, most roads were not much more than cowpaths, so the steel wheels may not have been too bad, plus they did not have to run at full throttle. People such as Jim that are more familiar with the F series may need to correct me though.

That's probably right. But the overlay of the old F tractor with the thought of a more modern "road gear" (at faster speeds) made me smile. That's all.

Many earlier makes and model tractors did not have a "road" gear. They weren't very fast, lucky if 10 or so mph, in high gear.

Lot of older tractors are to slow, with out modification, to participate in tractor rides.

Yeah, my ole F12 runs a blazing 3 MPH in 3rd gear (road gear).

IH stated the speeds of the F12 to be 2 1/4, 3, and 3 3/4 mph. Talk about a close ratio transmission! The F12 was probably the nearest IH predecessor to the Cub. The F12 had a little more power, considerably more weight and would pull greater loads than the Cub.
Various aftermarket suppliers developed additions/modifications for the transmissions for some tractors. Some of the tractors were IH models. Some of the modifications in some instances sacrificed certain features of the original tractor. As best I can recall, one such required that the clutch be operated by a hand lever instead of the original foot clutch.
Suppliers were Sherman. Heisler, and F&W and others.

Some really old tractors only had one gear forward. OK, it was really two, they had reverse.

Sure they do. They all have a road gear. What ever gear you go down the road in. May not be called "road gear" by everyone but the fastest gear was usually a "road Gear".

During WWII some Farmall H's were built on steel rather than on rubber as tires were scarce. As I understand it these tractors were not equipped with 5th gear. Vern

Were not equipped or could not use? Wasn't there just a longer bolt in the top of the transmission that kept you from being able to shift it into 5th?

That's my understanding as well, Scrivet, 5th gear was there but was locked out.
