Truck Prices

I've had the hankering for a new truck for a little while now. The 98 Dodge Dakota is on its last leg. I heard on the radio about the 2013 Motor Trend truck of the year. It's a Dodge 6 cyl and gets about 25 mpg hwy. Tow rating is plenty for what I'll haul. Sticker price over 34,000. Dang!
So I rode down to the Ford place. I had heard good things about the 6 cyl with ecoboost. Sticker price over 39,000!
Guess I'll go the used route. Anyone got a good one?

Similar situation here. My '02 Silverado just rolled 250,000. Biggest repairs have been front wheel bearings and a fuel pump--the only time it's left me on the side of the road so far! I know I am on "borrowed time!" There certainly don't seem to be any cheap, new pickup trucks out there. When I bought mine it was fairly loaded, it doesn't have leather but does have most of the other goodies. A plain 2wd extended cab Chevy stickers for a couple 1000 more than my truck did. Good used trucks aren't much cheaper and if you have to borrow money to buy used I'm not sure they are any cheaper at all in the long run.

Kinda hurts when the price of a new and some used vehicles are more than I paid for my house.

318 engine blew in Dodge pickup years back. Lots of miles on truck, good body and frame. Thought I would just go buy a decent used pickup. Available used pickups had 100 to 150K miles and way over priced.

Priced an installed engine from local dealership. Wound up installing a Chrysler factory rebuild 318, new radiator, suspension and brakes redone for less than 1/2 the price of a used pickup.

My twin just bought a brand new Dodge Ram 1500 - fully loaded 4x4 with the V-6. 34 would have been cheap. Up here that 34, 000 translates to almost 45 to 50 on the road. But he likes it, he almost lives in it as he does the run from Edmonton to Fort MacMurray and the other oil sand sites.

My brother-in-law Ray just bought a new Ford F-150 Lariat fully loaded 4x4 long box with the V-6. He really likes the V-6 compared to his V-8 in the '09. Mileage is much better and the Eco option works! He paid well over 59 for it and by the time it was on the road it came real close the the cost of my Honda Odyssey.

I wish I could buy a vehicle made in Canada for the same price you guys can get south of the border. Seems that the government has to have it's share of the pie 2 or 3 times :big give up:

Thomas,

Patience is what is required for used truck shopping. In November I bought a 2011 F-150 with less than 9000 miles on it. I had been looking and kicking tires for more than 4 months. It was worth the wait.

I was able to get a gently used leased truck Back in 2003. 2000 model with 29,080 miles. About 2/3 the price of new. Aside from radiator replacement last year and a/c service twice it's been a good one. 104,000 so far and still counting.

I bought my last one from Fastenal. They keep them well maintained. Most are 2X4 and regular cab. You can check on line what they have and where they are located.

When I was looking for a truck last time, I wanted a Ford (can't help it I'm a Ford guy) F-250 with a V-8, Extended or Supercab and 4x4 would be nice but not a deal breaker. Seems that's what everyone else wanted. I was looking at used trucks (new was not an option) but all I found was trucks with 80,000 - 100,000+ miles for in the neighborhood of $18,000. Now keep in mind this was in 2005. My father-in-law told me about a truck he saw along side the road for sale so I rode my motorcycle by to take a look. When I saw it was a dually, I turned around and went home.

A couple of weeks later I drove past it again to see if it was still there and it was so this time I stopped to take a look. To my surprise I found it only had 27,000 miles on it. I talked to the owner and he was only asking $12,000. A retired guy he and his wife only used it to pull a trailer to Florida for the winter and back in the summer. It had a V-10 which was a concern so I researched it on line to see what kind of mileage they typically get. The mileage wasn't much worse than what my current truck at time was getting. Anyway, long story short, I did a Carfax check to verify that nothing was amiss and bought it. Still driving it today with no problems.

You might want to take a look at the 2014 Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra. They have both been redesigned this year and offer some features that are important to cubbers.

Full disclosure - I work for GM and drive their products.

Beautiful! Have always liked GM pickup trucks--except for those dark years after 2002 when they had that hideous front end! Hopefully they fired the designers responsible....Anyway I haven't read it through yet but do they offer a built-in trailer brake controller like Ford does?

You did not say what options you were looking for, but at 34k to 39k you are talking about a pretty fancy rig. If you you can live without all the fancy stuff, you can get them for $10,000 to $15,000 less, though you may have to wait for one to be ordered. Many dealers like to sell the trucks with the gingerbread on them because their profit margin is a lot higher on them. Our local dealer will work with you to get what you want, not just try to sell you the most expensive.

Scrivet, did I do good?

Al - The brake controller is integrated into the truck when the trailer package is ordered. See the Tow with Confidence section in the link above for additional detail.

I do find the costs of a truck to be difficult to swallow. Ordering it takes longer to show up, but you pick the additional costs.
You might find some great prices on the remaining 2013's that are sitting on the car lots. Dealers are clearing these out and making room for the 2014's.

I bought a new 2010 Chevy crew cab Z71 LTZ loaded in Dec 2010, the last one they had. They knocked $10,000 off the sticker price.

You’ve got a lot of good info here for buying a used truck. If you look at low mileage late model trucks make sure they’re not rental’s….they don’t maintain them and when they have to be maintained they’re not done correctly. In my opinion I would stay away from the Chevy/Ford diesel, Dodge diesel would be ok as long it was taken care of…. Long term cost more to operate than gas.

We’re cutting back our operation and keeping only what is needed. Last Saturday I sold a 2007 4x4 Chevrolet with 61,000 miles in very good condition for $6500. The truck was advertized for two months and I had to lower the price to get rid of it.

I am stunned at the rust my Ford has gotten over the last couple of years, I think it's the liquid calcium they use?? The truck had virtually no rust on it when I bought it 4 years ago. Luckily one thing I required was an 8' bed, just replaced the 2001 version with a shiny white 2012 one! After much cleaning and painting of the frame and replacing the shocks.

When I took it to the body guy the other day, he recommended replacing the left doors for the rust before replacing the cab corner and painting the bed. Rust never sleeps! But it runs great (IH PowerStroke 7.3L) and is only a bit beyond the 1/4 million mile mark.

I found it on eBay.
