I'm back

Sandy was almost a non event here. Almost. About 4PM on Monday a huge gust went thru and took out 5 poles in front of the house. Luckily one was injured and there was no property damage. Luckily for us a power company employee was on the way home and saw the whole thing. Within 2 hours there were trucks everywhere. Why I do not know because nothing could be done in the wind. They blocked off the street and were back at 7 AM the next morning. We were back with power by 2 PM. Now the bad part. I called Time Warner to report the lack of service and the recording indicated that they were aware of the outage in the area and were working on it. Still no service this morning so I called back and was informed that my problem had been repaired.

SOOO After being on hold for 30 minutes and finally getting a real person they forced dispatched someone who layed a new underground drop on the lawn and we are now back up.

STUPID PART: The kids across the street were also out of service due to a cut drop. " I'm sorry I can't do anything unless they report it." Now they have to have someone come back. Lost time travelling more fuel expense etc etc. I could probably save them a passel of bucks if I taught them to do what we used to. If your were there and it was broke you fixed. Report or no report.

I will now get off my soap box.

I like progress! Like stepping back 10 steps, to go one step ahead! My neighbor's phone was acting up, this summer. The service person suspected the connection, where the fiber joined copper. He couldn't check it, until he checked all of the connections, in the mile of wire, leading to the fiber optic box. Hours later, when he git to the fiber optic connection, he found the problem. Protocol can be pricey! Ed

Cecil:

I am glad you and Pris made it safely through Sandy. It was a definite non-event here, simply rain. And yeah.. in the older days, service meant something and folks just did what had to be done.

Btw... feeling better?

Cecil in NY Tel we called them pick up troubles. Today I am sure you would get what the cable guy did.
I don't know about where you are but here most are outside contractors and get paid so much for the dispatch. Guy would be shooting himself in the wallet.

this one acutally worked for TW. On a positive note they came and buried the underground drop this morning. That was a contractor and he had 10 more to do today. Did a great job. Located the underground dog fence, went under the sidewalk and thru the flower bed. I had to look real hard to see where he buried.

Glad your ok. I think this storm really split up. It went to the left and right of CT but we did get some wind and rain. For it to travel to the mid west and go to mass, NH, VT and maine with power outages it had to split or grow even wider than reported.

I been planningt on designing a 12volt system for my new place in VT. I may do one up here in CT too. I have a 12v tv / vhs player and i just need a 12v dvd player. They do offer a kit that will run a 12v freezer with a small solar system. I'm throwing ideas up in the air right now incase we get a long term outage. If i can get off the grid and run the whole house for an affordable cost i'm golden.
