Face to face with a Mack bulldog

In the middle 70s I was working in a 2 way radio shop for a man that was nice to work for and a good technician except that he drank pretty heavily at night, and the next morning tended to sleep on the way to the first call or two and even through some of the calls. One morning we were headed north on I-55 when I caught up with a truck that was towing a Mack backwards with the rear wheels up. As usual Less was asleep, so I eased in behind the Mack, and when I go up pretty close I yelled, pumped the brakes and hit the horn. Less opened his eyes and all he could see in the windshield of my van was the top of the grill and that Mack Bulldog looking straight at him. Not only was his hangover instantly cured, but he never went to sleep riding with me again. :D

John, don't know if that was a gutsy move, or just plan mean! But what a hoot. You could always say, just had to wake you up cause you never saw a BAD wreck! Moral of the story, "don't go to sleep while John is driving."

My brother who works at Mack / Volvo took this photo at the Mack facility near Allentown, Pa.
It is the hand crafted wood model of the original hood ornament.

In the late '60s I had a '53 Bel-Air coupe with '54 taillights. Since the trans had been changed for a later model one, the backup light switch was inoperative. I put a manual switch under the dash, and when someone tailgated or didn't dim, I flipped the switch. What's the first thing you think when you see back up lights? Btw, I had a '56 Chev that accidently went into reverse while driving forward at street speed, twice. then it had to go to the repair shop, lol! That was when R was at the bottom of the quadrant.

I " understand" that some law enforcement officers , while hauling a very drunk unruly type to jail will yell DEER and slap the brakes on giving said drunk a taste of the seat partition. Then ask the drunk did you see the rack on that sucker and they always answer yep big one wasnt it
