Mercedes Diesel

Postby junkman1946 » Sun Feb 03, 2008 10:32 pm

Newest brainstorm out of of the brainstorm bag: Im thinking of stuffing one of those 5 cylinder Mercedes Diesels into a small pickup truck. The idea currently is 100%above my shoulders right now, but Id like to do a little research. I did a Yahoo search for Mercedes Diesel, but only found general info. Does anyone know of a forum or site similar to this one that deals with my subject? Thanks Frank

I would really like to see a pickup being produced by a major company, about the size of my pickup (Mazda B400 aka Ranger 4.0) Have similar towing capacity and excellent mileage, around $20k. Leave out all the luxurious frills and make a nice work pickup. I think they would sell a large amount of those! Hope to see this project take off. 8)

NIK, I don't think it will be in the price range you mentioned, but there is a Ranger/B400 one on the drawing boards the last I knew. At least a couple years away though.

My dad works for mercedes benz as a technition and he would be able to tell you about those (he's sleeping right now), I'll ask him in the morning. May i ask why you want to put a merceded diesel engine in a small truck anyway....

Do it

Postby flyawa » Fri Mar 07, 2008 10:28 am

It's certainly feasible.

MuleBoss and I were discussing putting a VW rabbit engine in a Cub.

I've transplanted several engines over the years and just about anything can be done if you've access to machine shop stuff and are a bit creative.

I put a BMW 6 cyl turbo diesel in a Bronco II one time.

I've seen the VW engine in a suzuki samurai. It made a great off road diesel.

I've owned a lot of diesels over the years and they are hard to beat, although the current price of diesel is a bit ridiculous. It's really a byproduct of production.

Ford Ranger

Postby flyawa » Fri Mar 07, 2008 10:33 am

Ford Ranger had two diesel options in 1984 and 1985.

I've got one with a Mitsubishi 2.3 litre and there was also a 2.2 litre but I'm not sure who made it.

I'f you watch eBay for Ranger diesel it will come up now and then. I've seen fairly nice examples for less than 3K

A cummins 4bt or 4bta seems like a good conversion. Dovebid.com has auctions of surplus trucks with these engines in them. Here is a link to more info.

if you look overseas there are alot of little diesels. However they do not pass code in this country, not sure why. Also jeep has diesels for their liberty that would work. Gas companies don't want little diesels here and dealerships don't want to sell them. Cars and trucks would run alot longer. Unless you got a ford 6.0 diesel then you run back to the dealership every other week to get it fixed

Ford does currently make a four cylinder diesel :!: But they will not sell it here but you can get it in Europe

We were thinking of putting a VW diesel in a ranger. At a 155hp it has as much power as my 84 2.3L did. Another one of my projects I never got around to.

Gee this thread came to life after a month. Ill try to answer everyones questions that I can Tractor Chick: The Older non-computerized Mercedes Diesels got fantastic mileage, thats my aim, plus they will burn just about anything for fuel. Theres one guy out here running one in a car on Used cooking oil, run through a fine sieve. He mixes it about 50- 50 with regular diesel. Flyawa: I think that 2.2 diesel was an Isuzu. They havent been used fpr 10 or 15 yrs. Rare as hens teeth. 2 Cubs: the 4bt Cummins is an axcellent engine but it wont fit under the hood of a small pickup without a humungous hood scoop. Small diesels are really drying up, and importing one from overseas would make the project cost prohibitive. Thanks for the responces. Frank

Frank you can get a kit from germany for the VW diesel will convert it to run on strait vegetable oil. It will start on it to. Most kits in the US you need two tanks and have to switch tanks and run diesel back through the engine before you shut it off or it will not start.

way back when thermoking used three cyl. mercedes diesels for their semi reefers a couple of us slid one into a ford fairlane. it worked, but needed a taller gear for everyday use. thermoking switched to a jap engine shortly before i got off the road.

I remember a 4 cylinder 1.8 liter that was used in Thermokings, possibly earlier than the 3 cylinder. It may have used some internal parts from the 180D auto engine but it was very different on the outside... nearly a mirror image. All the (8 ) Mercedes I've owned have been 4 cylinder diesels except for a 220 gas the 450 SLC I have now.

At one time I had plans to put a 190 DC (same as a 200D) engine in my Bronco but it turned out to be too tall to go above the front differential. :(
