Ford F250 Problem.

Postby Eugene » Tue Jul 31, 2007 9:03 pm

1993 Ford F250, 351 windsor engine, 4 speed manual with Over Drive.

Does this truck have a computer?

Problem: Started truck drove about 4 blocks to stop sign. Shifted from 1 to 2nd then to 3rd. Truck started to act like it was running out of fuel. Switch fuel tanks. Still acted like it was running out of fuel. Down shifted to 2nd. Truck ran fine. As long as I ran the truck in 1st or 2nd it ran fine. 3rd or 4th gear - running out of fuel.

Limped home. Haven't tried to fine the problem yet. I need to buy the Chiltons for this truck.

Yes that has a computer. Do you have a check engine light on? I would start by having the codes read evn if you don't have a check engine light on, there could be some codes to be read. If you have codes address the problem and see if it helps. Its hard to be helpful with the new computer controled engines because the old school rules on trouble shooting pretty much don't apply  . I had a 92 F-250 with the 351 one thing I remember is that Ford had two versions of the 351 in 92 standard duty with a carberator and a high output version with fuel injection.. Sorry can't be of much help.........

Didn't notice a check engine light. I pulled out from the stop sign onto a main highway. I was trying not to get run over in rush hour traffic.

Ford dealer left town several years ago. Nearest is about 30 miles one way.

I think the truck is fuel injected. Actually I have never been any further into the engine than changing the air cleaner.

Could be a bad fuel filter. I can only hope.

Thanks.

That is possible could always be something simple, I ll cross my fingers for ya :) ...... By the way the fuel filter is probly down on the frame rail just behind the drivers seat and there is a special tool that you will need to release the filter from thr line, its available at most auto parts stores for under 10 dollars.

Good Luck

Ford had a couple of nagging problems around that time. The fuel tank selector switch (electric) was known to fail. The gauge reading would switch but the valve would not open. Expensive fix $135 five years ago. Cheaper fix- mechanical fuel selector switch. Also if you have a box in the engine compartment marked Dynaspark or Dynaspark II they wrer another problem child. I cured my F-250 problems the dealer and several shops couldn't... I sold it and bought a new Dodge. One of the best things I've done. :D

Major problem Found

Postby Eugene » Wed Aug 01, 2007 6:20 pm

Just to let everyone know, Found the problem - I hope. I have fuel being pumped out of both fuel tanks and over the top of the rear tank.

I'll remove the pickup bed and take a closer look at the problem. Hopefully it is just broken hoses.

This Ford has a problem with the bypass switching from one tank to the other. I have to just about empty the front tank then switch over to the rear. The rear tank then fills the front tank.

This Ford has been/is a very good work truck. Gas mileage sucks. Rides nice on the road. Handles an 18' tandum axle trailer with 5K of tractors and parts really well. When purchased there was a Ford dealership about 1/2 mile from the house.

Dodge. Owned a couple. Wife still owns a Dakota - V6. V6 is underpowered. Doesn't ride well - not comfortable for long trips.

GM products. Next truck will probably be a Chevy. A very large dealership is located about 1/2 mile from house.

Took me close to 2 hours to replace the fuel filter. Front side unsnapped without a problem. Rear half of the filter was a bear.

Eugene ,
Why not just drop the rear tank, its easy just take off those two steel plates and the filler hose. You also need the same line tool that was needed for the filter.
