Wow! That was expensive - Or another history lesson.

Reference: Unterrified Democrat, Jul 11, 07. History of Osage County.

Background: 1845 Circuit court records. Farm wages in 1840's were 25 cents per day.

"An indictment for adultry was issued against William Anderson and Louisa Hill. They plead guilty and ask for the mercy of the Court. He was assessed a fine of Five dollars, and she was sentenced to one hour of imprisonment in the County jail."

My comment:
I have an excuse. CRS.

So, he was fined 20 days pay and she did 1 hour of jail time. Equal justice?

And another quote from the same article.

"December 5, 1848, an indictment was issued against Isaac Miller for "laboring on Sunday". He plead guilty, and was fined $1.00."

As a guess. This must be where government got the idea of income taxing hard working industrious individuals. Work 7 days a week and earn $1.75. Government takes close to 60% back as a penalty.
