Golf cart help needed

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Thu May 10, 2007 4:33 pm

I have a 16 year old 2 cycle golf cart that the muffler is plugged on. New mufflers cost more than the cart is worth. due to the angle of inlet and outlet, punching or drilling through the baffles is not an option. Does anyone have any suggestions how to clean it out?
Thanks

John - Seafoam of course!

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

I thought about SeaFoam, but I don't think it will solve this problem, a golf cart muffler does not run hot enough.

John,

Is it plugged with carbon or something else. Also, can it be removed?

If not seafoam then try some muriatic acid.

Old trick for carboned up m.c. mufflers Take it off, stick a lit cutting torch in the inlet just menough to ignite the oil and crud. Shake out the ash afterwards. Use caution their may be a slight explosion.

That's exactly how we would clean out expansion chambers for our dirt bikes.

checked the inlet and outlet, and both are dry, not oily like the old dirt bikes (83 to 1 mix), so I called a dealer that has sold them for years. As soon as I told him what I had and the problem he started laughing and said I can tell you how to fix it, you sure don't want to buy a new one. His instructions were to go a little to the left of the outlet (in front of the baffle) and drill 1 or 2 holes 1/2 inch in diameter. he said it would make it a little noisier but would solve the problem. He was right.

Wont that effect the expansion chamber properties?

golf cart engines are not high performance, high revving engines like a bike, max rpm on mine is 3200, plus it has a pipe about 18 inches long ahead of the muffler. the performance is definitely improved over a plugged muffler.

nope, old ParCar (formerly Harley Davidson). not very fancy, but has done good so far. I bought it used, and run around 30+ gallons of gas through it every year. When I told the service man I was worried the engien migh be worn out he told me that as long as it didn't get run without the oil mixed in he didn't think you could wear one out.
