Motor Oil ?? & facts....
Years ago i purchased a new '73 chevy 4x4 truck. I broke it in with mobil super 10/40 motor oil. I changed my oil every 2,000 miles. It never needed a quart added and it was never low on the oil level at every 2,000 interval. I put in another brand of oil and it needed a quart of oil after a week of normal driving. This made me test motor oils. I put the mobil oil back in and it was ok again and never needed any oil added.
Here's my test results;
1. Mobil super 10/40;
Never needed oil added between 2,000 mi. changes.
( mobil oil went 8,000 miles before it needed a quart added, i wanted to see when it needed oil added.)
2. Penzoil 10/40;
Same results as the mobil, it never needed any oil added beteen oil changes.
3. Kendall 10/40;
Same results as the mobil also, no added oil between changes.
4. Quaker State 10/40;
Down a quart in the first 5 days of using it.
5.Valvoline 10/40;
Same results as the quaker state oil.
So whats the point right? My point is sometimes it can be the brand of motor oil used rather than the engine being worn in the amount of oil usage.
My chevy truck was still running like the day i purchased it at 152k miles when i sold it.
I use only mobil, penzoil or kendall motor oils to this day. What ever i break the new car or truck in with is what i stay with i don't switch brands.
Any thoughts on motor oil with your cubs??

Funny thing Ive used Quaker State religiously in all my gas vehicles for 30 yrs. Id swear by it 10/30. Just retired my 96 voyager 256000 motor used no oil between changes. I could go on and on. But you know as Grandpa once said. "there an as_ for every seat."

I use the dollar store oil. Great results, much cheaper than name brand. No noticable difference in oil usage. The oil was put in that no name brand container by one of the big named refiners.
If you have been paying attention to the recent peanut butter salmenella poisoning. The manufacturer put the same peanut butter into containers for 5 or 6 different brands/customers.
Yup. You get what you pay for.

The topic of which is the best brand of engine oil comes up every so often. There are as many opinions on which brand of oil is best as members of this board.
Engines use oil. It's part of the lubrication process. Small amounts of oil get past the rings, valve guides and seals.
Down a quart of oil in a week is that good or not. Normally that would be excessive. However, without knowing how many hours or miles per week or the engine, the answer may be that a quart of engine oil lost or consumed in a week would be acceptable. The second part of the question is the economics of a quart of oil a week versus the cost of finding and repairing the oil loss/consumption.
Oil breaking down. If you are using any of the oils meeting current Automotive Engineers specifications - most likely not.

Jack,
Thanks for bringing that article back. I read it completely and I agree totally. I've been using synthetics in everything I own for many years and at the same 3000 mile, 3 month change intervals. I use Mobile 1 in my 1 ton truck and I also use the Walmart Synthetic in my tractors, generator, lawnmowers and cars. I checked the oil ratings between the Walmart Synthetic and Mobile 1 and they were identical. Motor oils have came a long way since our tractors were built!

When Dad bought the 41 H in 1947, he used ti a few days and then told the guy he was working with he was going to have to shut down for a say or two to overhaul the tractor because it was using so much oil. The man said that if it was using a quart a day the way they were working them (10 to 14 hours per day) that wasn't too bad. Dad's reply was "Yeah, but it is burning a quart an hour".Eugene wrote: The second part of the question is the economics of a quart of oil a week versus the cost of finding and repairing the oil loss/consumption.Eugene

Most of what this article says is good. But when it comes to his oil change intervals, keep in mind that he sells oil changes for a living.
