Solar Turbine.

Postby Harold R » Wed Feb 28, 2007 8:00 am

I'm constantly amazed by how vast a company I/H was. I had no idea they were into turbines. I thought Solar Turbine was a division of CAT. I've been by the plant, maybe Cat bought that division after I/H's demise. What were the applications for these turbines????? 8)

IH was exploring the use of turbines to power tractors.

Wikipeda got me up to speed on Solar. Very interesting. I have got to read more about the history of I/H. Sounds as if they were bigger than Generous Motors at one time. 8)

I became aware of the IH Solar business back in about '72. First time I went up the rear ramp of a CH-47, I looked up and there was the familiar IH logo on a Solar data plate on the APU.

Some telephone buildings had generators powered by them for emergency power where diesel would not do it for noise, vibration or other reasons. They were generally roof mounted.
