Eucaliptus wood

Postby Patbretagne » Mon Feb 19, 2007 4:27 pm

Hi guys, I wonder if someone can help my daughter, Mary, please.

She has seen a garden table for sale which is made of Eucaliptus wood. We are wondering whether it is something that is good to be left out all weathers without treatment.

Personally our garden stuff is all Teak which weathers so nicely. What happens to Eucaliptus.

I should say she wants to buy on Wednesday, that is 36 hours from now,

Can you help? :?: :?:

 Pat, It weathers very well a far as longevity goes but I think it splits as it dries out. It is a very hard wood with lots of oil in it. I used to burn it for firewood and it burns very hot. I have never seen furniture made out of Eucalyptus.

I just did a search and evedently is is a good outdoor furniture. I cc&p`d this info.

QUOTE: Eucalyptus Is Ideal For Outdoor Furniture
Renewable, Sustainable Resource

Eucalyptus grandis is a plantation-grown hardwood
Sustainably harvested and in plentiful supply
Responsible forest management reduces pollution, habitat destruction and other negative impacts to the environment
High-Quality Kiln-Dried Timber
Very solid with great durability and strength
Beautiful grain and smooth finish

A natural, long-lasting choice for sturdy outdoor furniture
Requires Minimal Maintenance

Extremely dense and resistant to rot and decay
High oil content repels water and moisture

Weathers to a soft gray if left untreated, or can be stained to maintain the rich tones
Then came Bronson

Hi Pat,

johnbron is right on target.

Just a few side notes:

1. Eucalyptus is so dense it will not float. (Really not important unless you are expecting very high tides.)
2. As it dries, it shrinks up to 35%. If the furniture your daughter buys is not well seasoned, it could crack.

Good luck.
