Name five things that are not regulated or taxed to some extent by the government.

When you look at it in a list like that, it does appear overwhelming.

Problem is not exactly taxes. It is how those taxes are spent. Governments seem unable to be wise buyers. This is why govenment should be keep small. I don't mind paying taxes. I mind greatly how my employees in DC, Lincoln and Lancaster Ct. spend that money. It is always easy to spend someone ele's money

It gets worse. Not only do we pay taxes, we pay taxes on previously paid taxes on previously paid taxes, etc.. Guess this should be a commentary for the Fair Tax proposal.

Here in Maryland, the waste going into private septic tanks is taxed. Locals call it the "flush tax". Maryland is imfamous for taxing the crap out of us.

Last year, the wise ones in Annapolis decided to charge those property owners with septic tanks $5.00 per month to "clean up the Chesapeake Bay". It is paid as part of the annual state property tax bill. I have yet to see plans for constructing ground water filtration systems using $5 bills as the substrate media.

How true George! And Carl, even those of us on city sewer get the flush tax, but its just more well hidden. But they definitely tax the crap out of us. And keep taxing it when it has left our bodies as well!

A few years ago I taught in a local high school. The school was so poor that the library was next to non existant, no books. The school couldn't afford books for the classrooms.

So where did some tax money go. $35,000- for new football uniforms. $1/4 million dollars to put the internet into each classroom.

My guess is that there are still no books in the classrooms. But they have a new football stadium/athletic field.

Just think; when you see your past students wearing their old “letterman's jackets” and acting cool in the welfare office trying to figure out how to fill out the food stamp paper work you can say that’s ;"double taxation with justification".

I was headed down that road and I just didn’t listen to my parents. Finally the military strengthen me out. I still wish I could go back and do it over again and get the knowledge my teachers tried to put in my thick skull since I missed out on so much.

If you could go outside this country and look at other education systems and the people that are coming out of their system, (even third world countries) it would scare you to death.

I have an associate that is an instructor for Ford Motor Company outside the U.S. and General Motors inside the U.S. One story he told me was about classes he gives in China. The students are polite, want to learn and they stay after class for extra knowledge. When class is held in the U.S. in most cases the contrary is happening. So can you blame our education problems on the educators, the politicians or on the parents who let it happen?

I was reading an editorial in a newspaper outside the U.S.about our education system. The illustration showed students in a U.S. classroom with their football uniforms on with a teacher saying you passed this subject.

It’s embarrassing how other counties look at our education system. What educator desires to be in a system in which the government tells you what time your lesson should be taught, completed and along with all the paper work? I think the U.S. higher education system is probably one of the best in the world mostly, I think, because our government has not got its “hands” in it.

All of the above is written from a former football player(with bad knees) that could not spell, read or write at a high school level when given a high school diploma and went to College to dodge the military draft. After being too unintelligent to make the academic grade point average required by the government, Uncle Sam made a soldier out of me, at which time I grew up very fast. After that adventure I completed my education via the U.S. tax player given to the U.S. Military. All this said, I wish I would have listen to my mother and father (grandparents too) about the need for education. Believe me; I would be in a lot better position now.

I have three young people in high school now that love sports and I let participate in some. First priority is education and fine arts mixed in. I think fine arts are important for character and self discipline. An example for fine arts is the marching band and martial arts.

My 3¢ worth.

I’ll let Tom finish the rest…
