Greeting from Alaska

Postby beaconlight » Fri Jun 02, 2006 7:27 am

Bev and I are celebration our 51st wedding anniversary. I worked here almost 50 years ago and she has always wanted to see the place so here we are. I don't recognize Anchorage it has changed so much. We had dinner across from the old City Hall. It stood out because it was a tall building then. I remembe they used to strart the fur Rendvous dog sled race there. They no longer have that. The idelrod has replaced it. I have pictures of me being tossed in a Walrus hide like a trampoleen by a native demonstration group. That was 1960. We take the Alaska railroad today. I am sure that will still be a great ride. I have advocated every one I know going to Alaska take the ride.

Bill,
I hope you guys have a great time. My son and new daughter-in-law just spent their honeymoon up there. They stayed in a bed/breakfast place just east of the airport. They had a great time.
Your dinner wouldn't have been at Blondie's Cafe? Thats very close to where they start the Iditrod or used too. They have a great breakfast!
The train ride is super but if your going to Fairbanks look out for the misquitoes
Have a great time!

I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

Bill, I envy you and Bev being there. It's a beautiful place. The last time I was there we took the train to Denali and stayed overnight, taking the guided bus tour the following day. We got a 5 minute glimpse of Denali before the clouds hid it again. We took a charter boat out of Homer and fished for halibut. They say that June is the best time to see whales in the Seward Bay area. Oh, check out the glaciers. Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Bill:

Hope you and Bev enjoy Alaska. Last time I was in Alaska was Fairbanks in 1978.... been a very long time. Not sure I will ever get back there... but I know I would love to take the Inside Passage cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage... that is apparently one of the most beautiful in the world...

Enjoy :!:  :D and congrats on 51 years together... that is one heck of an accomplishment. Em and I have 25-1/2 to go... almost half way there to get to 50 :!: :!: :!:

glad you made it back. i loved every minute of being stationed there. i drove up in 1992, and drove down in 1995. I think it was highway 1 to highway 2 to highway 3, or the other way around. man what a view, and what a ride. loved to do again some day when i take a month to do it. not a week . have fun and take lots of pictures.
