This is the Memorial display honoring the deceased and living Vetrans in our town of 230. Several of us get together and put it up the week before Vetrans Day and Memorial Day and leave it until the week after.
Image

It has been well recevied by everyone in the community.

Let's remember all our Vet's and their families in our prayers this Memorial Day.
I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

Memorial Day is their day, isn't it? It is supposed to be the day a
grateful nation pauses to quietly thank the more than one million men
and women who have died in military service to their country since
the Revolutionary War.
Or is it the day the beach resorts kick into high gear for the summer
season, the day the strand is covered by fish-belly white people
basting themselves in coconut oil, the day the off-season rates end
and the weekend you can't get in a seaside seafood restaurant with
anything less than a one hour wait.
Or is it one of the biggest shopping center sales days of the year, a
day when hunting for a parking space is the prime sport for the
holiday stay-at-homers?
Or is it the weekend when more people will kill themselves on the
highways than any other weekend and Highway Patrol troopers work
overtime picking up the pieces?
I think the men and women who died for us would understand what we do
with their day. I hope they would, because if they wouldn't, if they
would have insisted that it be a somber, respectful day of
remembrance, then we have blown it and dishonored their sacrifice.
I knew some of those who died, and the guys I knew would have
understood.
They liked a sunny beach and a cold beer and a hot babe in a black
bikini, too. They would have enjoyed packing the kids, the
inflatable rafts, the coolers, and the suntan lotion in the car and
heading for the lake. They would have enjoyed staying at home and
cutting the grass and getting together with some friends and cooking
some steaks on the grill, too.
But they didn't get the chance. They blew up in the Marine Barracks
in Beirut and died in the oily waters of the Persian Gulf. They
caught theirs at the airstrip in Grenada in the little war everyone
laughed at. They bought the farm in the I Drang Valley and on
Heartbreak Ridge, Phu Tai and at Hue. They froze at the Chosin
Reservoir and were shot at the Pusan Perimeter. They drowned in the
surf at Omaha Beach or fell in the fetid jungles of Guadalcanal.
They died in the ice and snow of the Bulge and the Vosges Mountains.
They were at the Somme and at San Juan Hill and at Gettysburg and
at Cerro Gordo and at Valley Forge.
They couldn't be here with us this weekend, but I think they would
understand that we don't spend the day in tears and heart-wrenching
memorials. They wouldn't want that. Grief is not why they died.
They died so we could go fishing. They died so another father could
hold his laughing little girl over the waves. They died so another
father could toss a baseball to his son in their backyard while the
charcoal is getting white. They died so another buddy could drink a
beer on his day off. They died so a family could get in the station
wagon and go shopping and maybe get some ice cream on the way home.
They won't mind that we have chosen their day to have our first big
outdoor party of the year. But they wouldn't mind, either, if we
took just a second and thought about them.
Some will think of them formally, of course. Wreaths will be laid in
small, sparsely attended ceremonies in military cemeteries and at
monuments at state capitols and in small town's squares. Flags will
fly over the graves, patriotic words will be spoken and a few people
there will probably feel a little anger that no more people showed
up. They'll think no one else remembers.
But we do remember. We remember Smitty and Chico, and Davey and the
guys who died. We remember the deal we made: If we buy it, we said, drink a beer for me.
I'll do it for you, guys. I'll drink that beer for you today, and
I'll sit on that beach for you, and I'll check out the girls for you
and, just briefly, I'll think of you. I won't let your memory spoil
the trip but you'll be on that sunny beach with me today.
I will not mourn your deaths this Memorial Day, my friends. Rather,
I'll celebrate the life you gave me.
This Bud's for you!
-Author Unknown-

Memorial Day is much more than a three-day weekend that marks the beginning of summer. To many people, especially the nation's thousands of combat veterans, Memorial Day, which has a history stretching back all the way to the Civil War, is an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country.

Please remember to honor our fallen vets!!!!

3:00 PM (Memorial Day) is the national moment of remembrance. (Hopefully) The entire nation will be unified in remembering our fallen veterans.

The Tomb of the Unknowns is also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It overlooks Washington, D.C., from a hilltop at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

I know this is the weekend we mourn those that have given the ultimate sacrfice. But dont forget the millions of vets as well that are left with injuries for the rest of their lives.

Especially those in illinois, indiana, ohio, michigan, and i forget the two east coast states. these were the bottom 6 states in the nation rated for assisting veterans with getting assistance for their disabilities. I can get that info if you are interested.

Being a disabled american veteran i am a little partial to thier rights. Speaking here is a good place to express thoughts, as there is a lot of vets here. Contacting you congressmen and let them know how disappointed you are with the care and treatment of vets especially when it comes to obtaining benefits, especially in those earlier mentioned states. Its said, but unless we make congressmen aware of the injustices of the individual vet, they rarely care, unless it is election time.

Case in point, my FIL, retired military, and served during 2 conflicts, congress passed a law stating those who served during 48-52 time period, should have FREE complete medical access for the rest of their lives. Well, being retired, he's to get free med, he served during that time period, so that is two ways his medical is free, but the VA still charged him more than what i pay for my kids to see a doctor. He won't let me notify the right people. boy i sure want too. The system won, he went on medicare, and i am sad to say, appears to be getting better all around care "downtown."

It has taken me almost 10 years to get my injuries and disablities somewhat accepted, and i am still fighting "the system" Ofcourse living in illinois, the worst in the nation, in helping vets, explains a lot, maybe i should move  .

You can go to DAV.org and donate money, they are one of the largest vet's organization, that fights the system, and helps vets with their disabilities. I am a lifetime member, and donate regular, as i see the good that they do. I get a quarterly magazine showing how they are helping vets just like me, and the familes that are involved for both living and non living. They also represent me when i "go into battle" with the system.

John:

US Vets are not the only ones who have to fight with Veterans Administration in the US or Veterans Affairs here in Canada. I have been battling them since 1992... it is difficult and it is a shameful state of affairs.

I keep coming back with this quote -- sometimes paraphrased..

During one of the MANY studies, hearings and other political processes which are basically a way for politicians to look good, but do absolutely nothing.. one of these politicians came out with this statement..

"I know what we demand of our servicemen and women, but I do not quite know what we owe them....."

hmmmmm. You gotta wonder where these people actually went to school to get themselves an edumacation... :?:

For those interested, I found this on the net a few years ago when doing a genealogical search for my ancestors in North America and Europe..

My Testimony at SCONDVA The first testimony is from our friend Susan Riordan whose hubby Terry was one of our Gulf War Vets who got GWS and passed away about 3 months after SCONDVA. At Time Stamp 1830 -- just a tad before.. mine begins...

Take a wild guess what happened at the end of the SCONDVA hearings... :?: :?: :?:

Sometimes I just have to wonder what hole many of these politicians crawled out of, because they certainly do not understand Duty, Honour, Country... which is the basic ethos of any soldier.

To all my fallen comrades.. Bravo Zulu and You WILL Never Be Forgotten.. and to all of my surviving comrades.... Keep on Truckin guys.. cause we gotta win it for those who follow.. Somebody has to stand up....

I hope I didn't offend anybody.. but this is how I feel...
