Here I am, thousands of miles from home, and not a piece of "red anything" is to be seen. Some BIG yellow stuff running around occasionally. Have a temporary job here on Maui, Hawaii. Tough job but someone has to do it. Been doing it for 7 years on and off. Now the reality... I'm house sitting a big house for a friend of my sister. Tough job when you get the use of her house, car, pool, and eats in the refrigerator. I do a few odd jobs for her and keep getting invited back. Win - win both ways. Now all I have to do is convince her that she needs to travel during winter time in St. Louis.
Finally got connected with Webtv and have been reading the 1923 posts that I missed.

Well Charles, seeing as how you're roughing it we'll do our best to keep some pictures coming. Try to rest and try not to overdo it!

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Islands
No RED anything yet - still looking. Rember that the whole state is nothing but lava and its eons of residue. No dirt here as we know it. Cubs like real dirt to play in...

As I recall from when I was there, a lot of the soil is pretty red!

Red soil
The volcanic residue (not the real, fishing worms love it, type of soil) is a brownish-red that gets on and in everything. You don't see much white here as it soon turns to the permanent island red. Boy does it stick to stuff. Used a pressure washer 2 years ago to try to remove some of it and the darn stuff doesn't budge a little bit.
