John:

HP has some good ones. I bought Em one last year for Christmas and it is a real quick scanner, and is not all that expensive. It is an HP 3670. I think it was around $149.00 Cdn so should be around $100 - $120US.. I think they have been upgraded now though. Check out HP Scanners for Home and Office. They are widely available at very good prices..

HP's are real good and reliable. Umax are also excellent. I have an old Umax Astra 6P and even though I cannot get drivers for it, and I have to have a Win98SE machine to operate it, it is a top flight scanner.. slow, yeah, but quality stuff...

We have a HP 2110, it is a printer also, but it can copy, and scan, which could be useful, we really didn't use it, but when we got it, I have used it many many times, for example scanning parts of manuals to bring into the garage...

Just my 2 cents

John, I bought an HP PSC-2355 all in one last summer, aobut $140 if I remember correctly. very happy with it's quality and speed, as well as the included programs. You can instal a photo cartridge and print great photo quality picutres using good quality picture paper. It is also failry fast prining in standard modes.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I have an HP 6210 and love it. You might not think you'd use the extra functions much, but you'd be surprised how handy the copier and fax are.
