Rust in my new precleaner. Buyer beware.

Postby Redcub » Sat Aug 31, 2019 12:37 am

I just opened a box with my new reproduction Donaldson Precleaner. Many of us members have originals and reproductions on our Cubs. They are a fun bragging rights addition to our tractors and can start a conversation at a tractor show. “... What’s that thing with the jar on it?” Unfortunately it has rust coming out of it. Read the letter below that I wrote to the shipper. ( Names withheld )
I just want you to know what’s out there before you buy. Thanks.
Redcub.

Hi, I just opened my box with a Donaldson Precleaner for a Farmall Cub ( size 1 3/8" tube ).
I noticed that the service decal was of extremely poor quality and that all of the letters were blurry. The red color in the word "Caution" didn't even line up. Looks like a silk screening error for sure. The jar had some debris in it and when I knocked the unit with my hand rust came out on to the table and floor. I used the back side of my packing invoice on the table and continued the rap the housing to find more rust coming out of the unit.

I'm not looking to make a return, and I don't want in store credit, or anything really. I'll fill it full of BB's and acetone and shake it for an hour. Then I'll get some of that gas tank liner that car restoration people use and coat the inside. That should do it.

I fully understand that you didn't even handle this product and that you are simply the middle man. You got this from an importer that brings them in by the container full and sells them to ( long list of tractor parts sellers deleted ), you guys, and many other independent Ebay sellers. Not your fault, you didn't know.

But,....you could really do the tractor restoration groups of the world a favor by getting in touch with that importer and explain that the INSIDE must be painted also prior to assembly or it will rust and that rust will go down inside the intake system. Not good. Maybe, just maybe,....word would get back to China and they will fix the problem.

Doubtful, but I gotta ask.

Regardless, I am in the situation that either I want one or I don't. Yup, I want one. Therefore, this is what I gotta' do to have bragging rights that I have a Donaldson Precleaner on my 47' Cub.

Such is life my friend.

Hmmm, maybe they took the cleaner for a test drive before they sent it to me? You know, just to really test it out. I took a flashlight and really looked down inside of it good. This thing has been sitting around for some time in a box in a moist environment, plus the month boat ride in the salt air across the Pacific.

Hard to tell, for sure, from the photo. But, it looks like it was already rusty before it was painted.

Don, I wondered about that also. I really looked at the outside and asked myself if they just painted over rusty metal with super thick paint and kicked it out the door. I'm undecided on that issue. The other question I have is, is there more than one company making these knockoff's? If yes, are ones from other suppliers just as bad, or better? Here is a clue for potential buyers, take a close look at the decal I received. It lacks the Donaldson logo at the top. That is the one I have. Here is a collection of decals out there. Mine is like the one in the upper right near the red star. ( I only wish my decal was that good  )

Super warning, this. Sometimes what they sell seems intentionally harmful.

I guess it was decades ago but many fasteners were supplied to the U. S. military. Well, it would be government first, then to other branches. All graded to certain spec but it was false. Helicopters went down, lives were lost. Who knows how many lives were lost or missions not accomplished by inferior bolts.

Mozer71, thanks. I almost lost a coworker one night due to a bogus bolt on the elevator on the tail of a Piper Cheyenne over Redding Ca. He put her down in Sacramento and lived. As far as intentional harm goes from manufacturers ,....I think that those companies make some prototypes for a potential customer as samples. Then the customer takes a look and says "...yes, these meet our specs and match the drawing in fit, form and function. Lets sign a deal..." After those guys leave and go home, substitute materials are used to save a few bucks $$. We get the results or low quality.

I routinely only buy in person and avoid using the internet, but these days you almost have to.
Buyer Beware.

And....so far only crickets from the seller.

Appears to be of the common canning jar design/style sold in grocery stores by the case.

Before I spent that much money for a single jar, I would try a Ball/Mason canning jar to see if it fit. Probably does. Then ask around for one in that shape.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Yes, that jar is suitable but as Eugene noted, standard canning jars fit them as well, if you can find that small size.

I am going to make a guess at this. IMHO it would be the one that does not say collector.

I was guessing the bottom one as the pre cleaner I bought had a rectangular patch when it looked like a decal may have been once
It was on the top , not on the side
Is that where its meant to be ?
