The Brutal Heat

Postby mozer71 » Sat Jul 20, 2019 12:10 pm

My hat is off to those who can deal with this oppressive heat. It isn't off long because I can't deal with it. These reflective caps and wide brimmed hats do work. It doesn't hurt to have two standby window units but that means there will be a power outage. Hope we get through this okay.

1 PM, 97 degrees, feels like 107.

Quit working in the shop about 30 minutes ago. Shop doors open, fans on, sweating up a storm. So back to the house, air conditioning, some inside projects.

I hear you Buddy. It is too much when a person strokes out in their yard or field. We've seen it and don't think we are immune.

Sunday, last day for the heat wave. Making good use of the day, fired up the smoker. Dashing in and out between the smoker in the garage and the air conditioned house.

12 lbs. brined, cured, pork loin for Canadian bacon
12 lbs. brined, cured, turkey.
3 lbs. potatoes
2 1/2 lbs. bratwurst.

And sweet corn for lunch. First local sweet corn of the season at the local farmers market.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Sort of makes me hungry. Horrible things have happened after the compression, high winds, trees down power down, highways flooded. These are the big things but many smaller things come from this. Because one AC unit was running heavy, a fuse blew. Before I took the last step into the basement, I noticed a nasty web. Grabbed a flashlight and some spray. It was about the largest "recluse" spider I've seen and I was wearing sandals. How did it know I was going to take that step to replace a fuse ? It all rolls back as not a heat injury but dang these things can kill you.

...and snakes, gators, and every bug and spider imaginable is why my son Erik can’t wait to leave Fort Rucker, Alabama in 4 1/2 months. He’s hoping to get Fort Drum in way upstate New York and have 4 seasons again.

Temp yesterday this time in CT was 95, right now 65.

Well I'm glad I retired from the fire service. I have been on lots of runs in this kind of heat it"s brutal.
We just put in central AC Mitsubishi mini split. We had 2 window unit because we have hot water heat.

I used to be out in the weather hot or cold, year round, though thankfully not full time. Most of my work was in temperature controlled environments. I have been retired 15 years and was still outside a good bit, but I had a heat stroke about 3 weeks ago, so during the high heat I came inside about noon and stayed the rest of the day.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Glad you are doing better, survived the heat stroke.

Fortunately it's suppose to be cooler than normal for a while, then normal temps again.

Hey, John *.?-!.* , sorry this happened to you. I can't push the envelope too far these days either. I lose my breath and certain pains, time to take shelter. It is 94 f around here at 1808 and doesn't get below 85 f until dark. It is terrible further away and I really hope our folks here, manage it well.
John *, again, I hope you are okay.
