what is a coppersmythe?

Postby coppersmythe » Fri Feb 08, 2019 12:23 pm

Good morning all from the chilly , dry ( finally ) deep south . for most of my career , when asked what my occupation was , i could always count on that quizzicle "look" from the person when they are told "coppersmith" . it has been a very rewarding and fun endeavor . i was told once by a very respected and world renowned architect that i was a terrible businessman ( i humbly agree ) , but a true artist . embarrassing to say the least ," craftsman " would be my term of choice . lots of good folks here on this forum have asked about it and i would promise photos some day . here are just a few of the 40+ years of my body of work . THIS IS NOT A SOLICITATION . i'm already booked up for 6 months while turning down work ( i'm supposed to be retired ) . while i spent 10 years at LSU and retired from there , i never stopped what i loved doing . two "full time" jobs for tens years was tough , but allowed my wife and i to retire a little early . Now its just for fun . coppersmythe..................... PS: all the items below were hand made out of copper sheets , black iron flatbar and rods , with hand set copper rivets . nothing is off the shelf or " store bought "

black iron chandelier painted pewter with a copper down light in the center of the middle level , that went in the entrance to a catholic church . when finished it was 6+ feet in diameter and 12 feet tall .

copper kitchen hood . solid copper flat bar with old fashioned hand set rivets .

gas lamp with hand wrought hanger.

roof finial of solid copper with solid copper flatbar . while it looks small , it was over 4 feet tall . i cant get this picture to rotate for the life of me. mods , can you help? finally figured out how to rotate photo . I.T. guys , your job is safe around me.

this is a photo given to me by a client . the one i made was about 6 feet wide and 5 feet or so tall . you can see the part of the architects drawings that gave the new dimensions . this was a bear .

Yessss Sir! Beautiful work, well deserving of an “artist” label, realizing that it takes a true craftsman to get there.

Just fabulous work Val. It's too late now but a "How it's Made" video of some that scroll work would be fascinating to watch. I can only imagine the time involved getting things just right to look the way they do. Again, Great Job.
