Well this morning Pris and I went back to see if we could do some retrieval.

There was only about 15 to 20 pounds of honey so I will have to feed them this winter and hope they survive.
I love free.

Honey beesAs some of you know I am going to install a couple of bee hives in the spring. In preperation I knew where there were a bunch of abandoned hives so I went "pickin" on Thursday. As I was getting ready to leave I saw this in the brush.

Re: Honey beesAnyone see those guy on American Restorers hose down a hive of honeybees in an old toolbox? Also the E-mail about the guy with the grill cover hiding a huge nest of honeybees, he killed them all.

Re: Honey beesCool pic
,,,,,, Few years ago I was mowing a customers lawn several passes I made under some apple trees on 3rd pass I noticed two large masses of honey bees they looked like a very large basket ball just dripping with bees I shut mower down ran around the house to front door at the point the bees just filled the air by the 1,000's I left my mower there the rest of the day until a local bee keeper came and got the two swarms of bees, he was mega happy to get those bees for free, that was the one and only time I ever saw a wild mass of honey bees a neat thing to see ![]() 57 Lo-Boy

Re: Honey beesMichael I added a top feeder yesterday. I wanted them to have a day to calm down. Now if it just gets warm enough for them to use it.
Re: Honey beesI found bees to be pretty interesting.
Apparently Indians called them 'white men's flies', they proceeded the westward 'migration'. The are not native here, brought over from Europe. Funny but before I spoke to Cecil yesterday I saw one clinging to the laundry on the line (good luck getting nectar off of my towel). They have been pretty scarce in the 'big city' lately. 1971 Cub (Rufus) 1950 Cub (Cathy) 1965 Lo Boy Fast Hitch (Nameless III) 1970 Cub 1000 Loader & Fast Hitch (Lee)
Re: Honey beesHere's the link, sad sad story.
http://insects.about.com/od/antsbeeswas ... ecue-1.htm My Dad moved a wild swarm into a hive probably 50+ years ago, don't know whatever happened to them, but I still have his smoker. Wife's alergic to bee stings so no hive here now. "It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows." -Epictetus

Re: Honey bees
Now that guy was really stupid! A guy who lives next to our farm is a bee keeper. He has many hundreds of hives. He lost a big part of them this year and it is gonna cost him $20,000 to replace what he lost. No wonder the price of honey is so high, we are loosing our bees. With no bees, no pollination, scary thought! We need to take care of our bees. ![]()
Re: Honey beesWow really thats sad but probly not intentional , had he known they were honey bees I doubt he or anyone else would have got the Raid out, what a bummer

Re: Honey beesI'm a new beekeeper just starting with two hives this past spring. Really have enjoyed the bees and looking forward to sampling a little of the fruit of their labor maybe next month. There is honey in the supers but it is not capped yet.
