Hickory Nuts

Retail price of hickory nuts is interesting.

Neighbor lady told me when she was a youngster that her family would harvest several wagon loads of hickory nuts and sell them at a collection station.

I have about 5 lbs of hulled hickory nuts drying. Will try to crack them out later this fall to see if they are worth the effort.

Hickory must be the orignal "Tough Nut To Crack". They are good, just a lot of work for small reward.

A Buddy of mine has a slew of chesnuts accross his lawn , it's a shame i don't eat them , he said to take all i wanted. I planted two english walnuts no nuts yet. Hickory nust sound like gun shot when the hit the tin shed roof.

A local state park has a lot of Walnut trees in the campground. Not a good place to camp on a rainy, windy fall day. Walnuts falling 30 feet make a lot of noise on a metal camper roof. ALL NIGHT LONG :x

Yeah, I've spent many hours cracking hickory nuts. They are tough and frustrating, but man, is that meat delicious. Worth the effort? Maybe not if doing a lot of them, but those first three or four are certainly worth it.

Eugene a couple weeks back I went up into the mountains of central pa for my yearly venture to the Briggs Family Farm Bluesfest. While there I ran across a fellow selling shagbark hickory syrup. He said he was one of two people he knew of selling this. His web site is www.razzshickorysyrup.com .

Interesting on the hickory syrup.

The Univ of Mo. has a forestry section trying to develop products from Missouri's forests. One of the products that folks are expermenting with is maple syrup.

Take those nuts and hulls,soak in water for a couple of hours and put them over a bed of coals. Makes an excellent smoke. Works well on most meat but poultry is the ticket. I have also used them green on turkeys
