white corn

Has anyone have experience with white Indian corn? I was given some seed from last years crop to plant next spring. This stuff does not look like regular white corn. The kernel is almost round and bigger. The fellow said he got it from a local Indian ( Cherokee) and it is preferred for bread. The stalks are said to grow to 9 feet with a single ear per stalk. I ground 25 # for the fellow. It was softer than regular white or yellow. Any info?

It's probaly Hickory Cane/King. A old non-hybrid the old folks used for meal and green corn. I have tried to raise it several times, but it is sweet enough that the coons raid most of the ears. Makes good cornmeal.
I have a small amount of seed if you want some.

It's also used for making homemade hominy too! I have always wanted to try some but never got around to ordering any seed for it, so should try some next year!
It would also make good corn flour!---last year I grew the hopi blue and it made good flour or roasting ear corn, not sweet but tender! thanks; sonny

I have some in the yellow and the stalks are so high that the top ear is often over your head. The wind blows it down too.

Sounds like I better start looking for a corn binder. I'm getting excited. Is spring here yet?

I hope you can find one. If "Scrap-iron Fever" hit your area as bad as it did here, there may be none left. :(

Unfortunately Mike you are right. Yesterday we had our 15th annual Rural Resources Arts Fair. I ask the old timers if they knew of a binder and all said they had not seen one for years. I had the grist mill set up with the Super A and a hand sheller and burr mill for the kids. I had to wonder if we were the last generation the know about this stuff.

I ground 100 pounds of corn today, at the neighborhood veg.stand. Antique tractor day, 22 tractors. Mine was the only one "working". Ed

Keep up the good work Ed. I just finished a breakfast of mush made from the corn I ground Saturday. It's the best there is. Freshness cannot be compared with the junk that's sold in the grocery store.
