February is American Heart Month
Cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, is the number one killer in America. In fact, heart disease causes about 29 percent of all U.S. deaths. The disease affects men and women of all ages and backgrounds, and the fire service is not immune. Heart attacks remain the number one cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities and are responsible for almost half of all line-of-duty deaths each year.
In recognition of the nation’s ongoing fight against heart disease, Congress issued a joint resolution in 1963 requesting that the President issue a proclamation each year designating February as American Heart Month. The purpose of this annual proclamation is to renew the nation’s commitment to fighting this deadly disease and increase public awareness of how to prevent cardiovascular illnesses.
You can take control of your health and help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. Start a fitness plan, eat a heart-healthy diet, and don’t smoke. Remember that your mental health affects your physical health, and get help if you need it. Stay one step ahead of health problems by educating yourself and taking steps to adopt and maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle. Make the most of this American Heart Month and set the stage for a healthy future.
The Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program has the resources, tools, and information you need to keep your heart strong. It the only national program dedicated to saving America’s firefighters and EMS personnel from heart disease. Learn more on the Heart-Healthy Firefighter web site.
