VR for a 154 per IH TC131 Parts Catalog Rev 8, 1-72 is 1 118 991, it's probably the same for a 185.

TC-131 Rev 15 shows the same regulator for both tractors.

Your local auto parts should have a 12 volt regulator to match the starter/generator. They will/should have one that closely matches the 185's S/G amperage output, 25 or 31 amps.

Last time I purchased the voltage regulator, old guy behind the counter said that the regulator was common on older 12 volt Chevys using a Delco generator.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I used this one from DB Electrical on my 154 and it works.
Generator Regulator 14.2 Volt 15-18 Amp Output parts number 8040-6174.
Ad says it replaces 1 118 991 among others.
Delivered price was under $30.00.
I did have an extra terminal on mine that is not used.

I have the right one I thought it was bad but apparently they need a good ground. I had to drill a hole in bottom of regulator hold down and bolted it directly to the generator where a threaded hole already existed that wasn't being used and now it's back to charging again!
