Re: farmall 184
Make sure there isn't a clump of grass jammed in the blades.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: farmall 184
Remove the PTO belt cover from the rear of the tractor and remove the belt from the PTO pulley then check to see that all the deck pulleys and spindles turn freely. Check the two idler pulleys at the bottom back of the tractor are not seized and turn freely. With the PTO belt off the drive pulley start the tractor and engage the PTO. it should not bog the engine. Make sure you are not trying to start the deck in grass and that the engine is warmed up and at least half throttle.

Re: farmall 184
Is this a rotary, belly mounted mower, and not a sickle bar mower?
To answer your previous question, 60" mower deck were/are common mounted on the numbered Cubs. 6 foot deck is probably to large for the tractor.
After you check out the mower deck for potential problems, tune up the engine, include compression tests in the tune up.

Re: farmall 184
When I bought my 184 it was billed as having a 6' deck. True it measures 72" side to side, but it's a 3160a with 60" cutting width. This confuses some people - they call it 6' when it's not.

Re: farmall 184
Does it totally cut out when the switch is thrown? You make it sound like an electrical problem. I don't know if there is a safety cut-off that is intended to work when the mower is running. If the problem appears to be electrical, try bypassing components with a jumper wire. Start by jumping a hot lead directly to the ignition coil and see if it continues running. If so, use the jumper to bypass specific switches and connections to isolate the problem.

Re: farmall 184
Unless someone has modified the tractor wiring the ignition on a 184 should not be affected by the PTO switch. It does have a lockout on the started solenoid circuit. A quick way to check if the tractor is shutting off when you turn on the deck is to remove the belt from the PTO pulley at the rear of the tractor and engage the PTO. If the bearings are not seized the PTO shaft should turn. If the engine shuts off you have a wiring issue. If engine stays running the load of spinning up the deck is stalling the engine.

Re: farmall 184
Definitely check all of the above, but you may also have a fuel system problem. I just finished a carburetor rebuild because mine was running so bad that it would occasionally stall the engine when engaging the PTO. If you are having to run it with any amount of choke once warmed up, it may indicate a carburetor cleaning should be done. If it's running great without needing choked, disregard... just trying help cover any possibilities. Good luck!

When you say the engine cuts out I assume you mean the engine quits running?
I would check the wiring under the dash for wear spots or Chafing

Re: farmall 184
Does it also shut off AFTER the engine is warmed up?
My 184 also dies when you flip the pto switch if the engine is not warmed up. Probably due to a weak engine and mower drag due to worn bearings. Mine works fine after letting it warm up for 3-4 minutes.

Re: farmall 184
Also look at the Amp gauge when it shuts down to see if it pegs out on the discharge side.
That would indicate a dead short in the wiring.

Re: farmall 184
An electrical short in the electric pto circuit should pop the fuse on the top of the dashboard, not kill the engine.

Have you conducted compression tests? Complete engine tune up?
