185 starter/generator

Postby Mike H » Thu Jun 30, 2016 3:42 pm

what else is there to do on a rainy day but bench repair work
started working on the original starter/generator that came with the tractor that failed shortly after purchase a year ago.
found no sign of failure [fire, brimstone, smoke ]but I did find 1 brush holder bent about 15 degrees out of line and the other one loose.
how this happened I don't have a clue, hopefully ill be able to bend it back into place.

update;

the starter in the pictures failed so the unit that was purchased last winter was reinstalled with mediocre results [barely turned it enuf to start] :?
it was getting hot and smelling like hot lacquer.
this has been an on going problem sense we purchased the 185 a year ago
got the bright idea of installing a bonding strap, use to use these in industrial control panels and on installed equipment to reduce static interference
went from the starter/generator to the mount for the coil.
WOW this is the best the starter/generator has ever worked ,and was able to start it repeatedly :{_}:

guess it wasn't grounded well

Greetings fellow 154 Lo Boy owners. I am brand new to the forum so bare with me.
I Just acquired my 1974 Lo Boy 154. the wiring harness was partially removed or missing all together.
I decided to perform the basics. pulled generator off. I found bent brush holders. not sure how that happened. The voltage regulator was completely welded by high heat.
I think the "proper Grounding is an excellent idea. Many coats of old paint I will remove.
I am in desperate need of a wiring diagram to insure I rewire everything properly. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi vann,

Welcome to the website. Here is a 154 owner's manual I found. It is from November 1973, it says. Probably for the 1974 tractor.
It is the manual at the top of the list. You have to go to the far right to get to it, then on the next page you have to click on a button at the bottom of the page to go on to the next page. Then the manual is at the top of the page again. Then it will download.
The wiring diagrams are on pages 28, and 29, the info for the pics is on page 30. Hopefully that is what you need, and you can repair the tractor. :)

Hi Vann, there are some free download 154 LoBoy and attachments manuals in the PDF MANUALS at the top of this page. Try this link: http://www.farmallcub.com/[ Sorry, direct links to manual section is not allowed. ]/index.p ... oy&order=0
Also many of the engine parts are common to the regular and LoBoy Cubs. Be sure to check TC-131, TC-37F and ENG-1 Rev 20.

You guys are really a super help. I glanced through the manuals you recommended and I believe it is what I will need to get this tractor restored.
A good retired friend and I today replaced points condenser, rotor button, dist cap all plug wires, cleaned gas tank out, flushed radiator.
installed new brushes in starter generator, mounted everything back up. Next we will get after the wiring, unfortunately it will have to wait till we get back from a planned visit with grandkids. BUT I WILL BE TAKING LAPTOP AND STUDYING WIRING. Original owner had all wires disconnected from generator and voltage regulator. I just want to make sure I don't "fry" the new regulator. THANKS A MILLION FOR THE HELP :hattip:

Fellows, you are awesome! I just acquired a 154 with a bad PTO clutch, and you just pointed me to the manual I needed to understand how to fix it! Thanks a bunch!

The manuals have truly been a help. Thanks to all.
