Question for the Generator experts out there

Postby Yellowbeard » Sun Jun 19, 2016 1:15 pm

The parts callout for Lo-Boy 154/185 tractors is Delco Remy 1101693/1101698. My 154 has an 1101432 in dire need of a rebuild. Can anyone offer a summary of differences between these three models? I'm not interested in buying a Chinese repop, but I want to know if there are drastic differences in specs between the models before I shell out considerable coin to rebuild a generator that may not be as correct for my application as it could be. Thanks in advance.

Parts catalog calls out 1101432 as the replacement for the other 2 numbers.

Thanks Jim. I just read that the 1101432 was standard on 185s. Makes sense. Right now, with engine running at full throttle, no load, I'm reading 11.5 volts output, and the ammeter needle lives in the middle of the DISCHARGE zone. When jumped by a running vehicle, the reading runs up 10 13.5 volts, and the ammeter needle is over on the CHARGE side. The generator makes a telltale ticking noise when running. All that coupled with my inability to find a phantom power draw tells me the trusty 1101432 is due for overhaul. One final question: Are the covers on the repop voltage regulators being sold (which have a similar two screw cover) the same as the Delco covers? If so, I'll drop a few quid on a new VR and doll up the old Delco cover and reinstall after the generator rebuild.

I'd start by cleaning the contact points in the regulator. Pay particular attention to the voltage regulator points (the ones you find closed when you take the cover off). Use a point file to clean them. Do not use sand paper, emery cloth or any other type of abrasive paper/cloth.

Try grounding the generator F terminal with a jumper wire.

Repair parts for the S/G are available at your auto parts store. Been quite some time since I rebuilt one, guessing $40- or less.

The voltage regulator, if you need to purchase, will be almost twice the repair cost of the S/G.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Given the rather noticeable ticking from the S/G, I'm guessing a broken brush riding the armature, so I'll be in the market. Right after I work my way through the 47 other tasks on my 'honey do' list. Retirement sucks...
