2nd 154 Lo-Boy... Good Deal?

Postby ihcc104 » Sat Jan 02, 2016 9:51 pm

So I just bought my 2nd lo-boy today. It doesnt run... PO isnt sure if it is stuck or not nut put oil in cylinders when parked...

It has dual brakes, rear 3pt, creeper, wheel weights on all 4 tires....

When it was parked, he said the creeper was popping out into neutral... so I will have to investigate. I bought this for parts and accessories for my other 154, make one out of the 2 and sell the remaining parts.

It is rusty, sheet metal is bent, and front spindles are stuck...

I paid $550... what do you all think? It was an impulse buy and one that had to be rushed... another guy was on the way to look at it

I will have pics when I get it home. :D

I think you did OK. The 3pt setup is worth what you paid for it. I re-read your posts and didn't see a lot of information about your first 154 other than it has a mower and blade. I would take the one with the creeper and 3pt setup over one without it if I had the choice. Maybe you intend to keep both of them......  Good Luck with the project. :hattip: Stan

Well it will be a good project. The last two part tractor cubs I bought are both runners now. Just take a good look at what you got then dig in.

Well.... I dont have room for both... My yard size doesn't warrant having one of them. Lol, but I have wanted one for over a decade now so I had to get the first one... but like you said it only came with the front blade and mower deck, it was a bare bones model... no extras. This one has all the extras and no attachments but it really rusty whereas my first one is clean. Any idea what could be wrong with the creeper? Maybe a few bad teeth on one of the gears?

I will probably end up taking the extras off the new one and put on the other one and sell off the rest.

Do you think it is worth swapping over the dual brakes to mine with the single brakes?

I suspect the cause of the creeper slipping out of gear is the spindle drive sleeve and associated parts, the shifting mechanism, and not broken parts in the planetary gears.

Dual brakes are nice. Probably worth the effort to switch over to the keeper tractor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Depending on weather and my efforts. I would like to move the 3pt, creeper, tires/rims, dual brakes to my original lo-boy... After all of that... im sure I could get 150-200 out of its remains on CL... someone would buy it... I'd love to keep it for a spare, but I have no room.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Just thinking.

Simplest method of swapping parts is to split the tractors removing the rear ends. Swapping rear ends.

While you have the rear end out, check the brake linings, PTO parts, and repair the creeper.

There will be other parts to swap such as the drive shaft and perhaps hydraulic plumbing.

I will probably wait until spring before I swap everything over.... I bought my first Lo-Boy because I was tired of beating the crap out of my Cub Cadet 104 during the snow storms here in CT; I gave my 104 an engine overhaul. So I hope this Lo-Boy works better than the little Cubs, I got chains for the Lo-Boy so we will see.....
