Cub lo-boy color codes

Postby pilot199 » Mon Oct 26, 2015 10:03 am

I've spent some time researching IH paint color codes to use on my 3 IH tractors. The problem I have is finding the correct white color to use. I've found the #901, 902 & 935.

The #901 paint matches up pretty well with my '69 model IH 656 but this color is much too "creamy" or "off white" than the white color used on my '78 model IH 184 Cub lo-boy. This tractor came with more of a true white color (still not refrigerator white but close). The Van Sickle Paint Co. has a 4 of the "IH whites" in their color chart but none of them are "as white" as what is on my 184.

Did Cub's use a different white than what IH used on larger tractors???

Researching more I found that IH had a "winter white", IH code #9219 but this may have been used on the IH Scout & pick up trucks.

Thanks,

Gary

There are 3 colors of white used on the International Harvester tractors. Your 184 had 935 white on it from the factory, but since it's now over 30 years old, it has faded to a more chalky white color. All of them did, so you cannot really compare any new paint to the factory color that remains on your 184. Below is a description of each color and when they were used. All of the IH tractors used the same paint colors through the years noted below.

(I originally wrote this for Cub Cadet tractors but it's true for all IH tractors).

The correct white color for 1961 and through 1967 would have been 901 white It's hard to find, and you almost have to get it mixed at NAPA or somewhere. The 901 white has an olive tint to it and is definitely visibly different (a bit darker or grayish) when next to 902 white and 935 white.

Most, people get 935 white for their restorations because it is still readily available, but it was not used on Cub Cadet or Farmall Cub tractors until 1970. It is the typical creamy white that everone associates with IH products. 935 white is pretty darn close to 901 white, and you'd never know the difference unless you actually had 901 white next to the 935, in which case you would see that 901 is visibly more olive color than 935.

902 white was only used on 1967, 68, and 69 tractors and is almost "chalky white" looking and MUCH more white than either 901 or 935. Rarely does anyone ever find or use this color, and you would have to have it mixed special as it's not available from CaseIH.

Here are the three:

Now, you mentioned a 4th color, and unfortunately it's out there but it's not an IH color. In the 1990s, Cub Cadet Corporation (MTD) started using yet another shade of white, and this is the 4th one you've found from Van Sickle. It's not correct for ANY of the IH built equipment, however, I've seen it on a lot of cheapo restorations. It is WAY more creamy looking than any of the IH white colors, and it's very obvious when someone has used it on a tractor. Stay away from this one.

Lastly, you mentioned Winter White, that is an IH truck color and it was not used on tractors.

gitractorman, thanks so much. You've finally put this issue to rest for me.

I didn't realize that the fading issue would have such a significant effect. Thanks again,

Gary

Yea, not sure why but the 935 paint used in the late 70s, early 80s really faded to white pretty fast. Every machine I've seen from that time looks like the white is "bright, paper white" in the parts exposed to the sun. If you pull a tire off the rim, or turn over a mower deck shield or something that was protected from the sun, you'll see the creamy 935 white color.
