IH 184

Postby auburn » Fri Sep 25, 2015 6:19 am

Just had a IH 184 (lowboy?)given to me.It has a belly mower and looks to be in good shape if I can get it running.Right now it isn't firing at all.but is getting power to the coil.
This machine has been sitting for 4-5 years and believe it or not the battery took a charge.
I am going to see if I remember how to work on a points ignition system..I am thinking the condenser might be shorted because I show 12v on both the + and - side of the coil at all times..its been many years since I fooled with this type set up and I dont remember so well..but hey..cant beat the price!

Do you mean a 184?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I assume that is what he's got, Bill, never heard of a 148. It sounds like you just need to clean & adjust the points, Auburn. Voltage on both sides of the coil, at all times, indicates that the points are not making contact. That's very common and the first thing I check on a tractor that has set for any length of time.

At the top of the page just click the link to Rudi's Manuals, and then click another link for the Number Series Cubs, where you will see a link to the 184 LoBoy.

The operator's manual should get you started.

A lot of the tractor's major components are the same as the standard Cub. Under Rudi's manuals, GSS service manuals will cover a lot of your needed information.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Free download manuals at the top of this page, look for the numbered series loboy. If you have 12v on both sides of the coil continuously, there is a problem with the points not grounding the circuit when closed.

If you would like a service manual (GSS-1408) or parts list (TC-131), Binder Books reprints the original manuals and they are excellent.
The 154, 185, and 184 tractors are represented in these manuals.
