184 Engine Timing

Hello all, just registered for this forum! Recently purchased a 78 loboy 184 and I am looking for the correct procedure for timing the engine from scratch. I see there are 2 marks in the front crank pulley. The governor is currently off my machine as well as the distributor. I watched a video on how to time an older cub with a magneto and it seemed fairly simple but I know this one is different. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

The first mark is TDC, for static or low idle and the second is 10 degrees BTDC to check the distributor advance at operating speed. The governor you have has different weights for higher RPM operation, but service is the same.

Welcome Dan. You are about 2 hrs away from Cecil's, who should have a fall Cubfest.

I probably can help you with timing, but to save face, I will let the real experts chime in to give you the best advice.

There is a timing mark on the governor gear, so be aware of that when you install it. The manual has all the info you need.

I believe Bob reversed the marks, as you turn the engine, the first mark is 13 degrees Before TDC for use with a timing light, and the second mark it comes to is TDC for static timing.

Thank you guys for the quick responses. I did find some info as I dug deeper and I will be downloading the manual now that I can. Should be some prick punch marks on the governor gear and crank gear and yes the second should be TDC for static timing. It ran good until I tore it apart so hopefully I can figure it back out haha.

Set #1 cylinder (front of tractor) at TDC on the compression stroke. (valves closed)
Verify that 0 degree timing mark is aligned with pointer on front crank pulley.
Verify rotor is pointing toward 1:00 distributor tower.
Install distributor cap.
Connect #1 plug wire at 1:00 position on distributor cap.
Connect #3 plug wire at 4:00 position on distributor cap.
Connect #4 plug wire at 7:00 position on distributor cap.
Connect #2 plug wire at 10:00 position on distributor cap.

If all the timing marks are lined up in the engine, then this should get you close enough to start the tractor.

Use a timing light to set the timing at wide open throttle (use the advanced timing mark)
Verify that you are getting the proper RPM out of the engine using a tachometer. (see specifications)
Adjust governor to achieve specification (high idle and low idle)

Reset the timing again after adjusting RPM.
Verify that the timing changes as the RPM's get close to low idle. They should get close to the zero timing mark.

spes, iirc is set to 16 degrees, I used a timing light to set
