1972 Cub lo-boy quit moving

Postby Terry-154 » Sat Jul 11, 2015 7:44 am

My Cub 154 suddenly stopped moving. Even when gear shift is in neutral, engine strains but tractor will not move. Clutch break bolt was not connected (Nut missing) and I replaced bolt - Tractor engine strains when clutch released but will not move. Engine strains in neutral when clutch released.
Should I concentrate on clutch (adjust or replace),
OR Creeper (that does not work when knob pulled.)
Or ???

Put the tractor in neutral and engine off. Can you push the tractor? If not something wrong in transmission. Stuck in 2 gears or somewthing broken and wedged in gears. If it rolls in neutral then a cluth problem most likely.

It's real common for a bolt to break at the rear of the drive shaft. If it rolls around when in neutral, then the is likely the problem. Not a tough fix but you need to get the correct bolt from a dealer.

Thanks to all.

I made my own Clutch Break pin, but had it too tight. I loosened it up to allow the throwout bearing to run free.
I made sure the gear shift was mounted properly to allow the tractor to roll.

Again, Thanks for the support.

I am still having problems with the clutch and shift. I adjusted the clutch and removed the shift lever to make sure I had a good neutral. Initially, I was able to move the tractor. Then it locked up again. I may have something loose or broken in the transmission or creeper drive that locks up.

I am in the process of pulling the clutch and don't know what the shop manual means. "Remove Tunnel cover" (OK). "Remove bolt from clutch shaft coupling" (OK) "AND SLIDE AHEAD (Problem) :help: . What slides?? Should I disconnect the hub on the drive coupler?

My problem turned out to be inside the creeper transmission. Loose teeth jambed the drive.

Hello Terry. I am a new member too. Even though my 1971 154 is very similar to yours, I don't have that " Creeper" reduction. I think that there could have been more general advise but wrong advise is worse than none. It appears you analyzed this situation and went forward to loosen shafts and find the problem. I commend you for persevering in what seemed darkness. There are many who could have assisted but that was timing. You are ahead now and already know about the planetary gears. There are way more rebuild kits and gears than there are units.
If I had the Creeper, I would only use it when needed. Otherwise it would be locked and lubed for another day. Ebay has parts from the recommended companies mentioned here or contact them directly.
At the pace you are moving, there could be a video or some pix tackling very high stuff. Your pace of repair was fast and the speed through the high stuff must be slow. Altogether, high stuff falls down because the deck blades are very fast with a low feed.
