1978 LoBoy 184 wont start

Postby international1231 » Sun Jul 06, 2014 11:30 am

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I have a 1978 International LoBoy 184 that has been sitting for 8-9 years. it ran great when we left it so we know there was nothing wrong then. Now im making it my summer project to get it up and running, but i dont have much knowledge about this tractor. I know the battery is way past dead, so i hooked up cables, and turned the key, the lights come on. When i try to crank it, not a single sound at all. I noticed the oil light comes on for a second, then starts to flash. I have no idea what this means. there is plenty oil in it. The gas tank is rusted so i cant put any gas in it and there is no fluid in the radiator. Maybe im an idiot and i just need radiator fluid or something like that but it seems to be more than that. To start off, i thoroughly scraped the connections to the battery and on the battery as well as the starter. Im just a bit lost on what i need to be doing to have this up and running. A little help would be very much appreciated! Thank you! I will try to attach some pictures!
Jesse

Are you pressing clutch while attempting to start? I believe it has safety starting switch

Thank you for the help! That was not directly the problem however. I did a direct jump to the starter and she cranks nice and strong. There must be a loose connection between the battery and the starter somewhere

Prime the oil pump before you go any further. Use the search function to find out how. Did I say that prime the oil pump.

The flashing light on the dash is low or no oil pressure indication. Once engine starts and oil pressure comes up the light will go out.

On your no cranking problem. Move the battery ground from the sheet metal to the transmission top.

Check the condition of the ignition points.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Eugene has the right idea. Search, search and search some more. This forum has the most willing to help and nicest guys that you will find anywhere. Rarely, will they be stumped by a question about the cub. However, questions about engine not starting, engine running rough, transmission problems, charging problems, pto problems, etc. have been asked and answered multiple times. A new member or old for that matter, can greatly benefit by spending hours, even days, reading the older threads and posts. A huge wealth of info is available at your search finger tips.

if you haven't already, put a new battery in it, then make sure all connections are clean and tight on the B= as well as ground side, if no crank after that, start looking at the ignition switch which usually triggers a selonoid to bridge power to the starter...........
