Just my opinion, don't bother. Standard ignition works great. For the purchase price of an electronic ignition you could purchase many years worth of points and condenser. That was my 2 cents.

Search this site. There are numerous post on the topic. Some folks swear by them.

The electronic ignition systems usually take the multi-strand carbon impregnated wires.

I'm in the "swear by" camp! I've installed quite a few of them and all are running strong! Ask your specific questions and we'll try to answer them for you. The instructions that are included with the kit are really quite good.

Were you asking about electronic ignition conversions, or just maintaining a standard electrical ignition (distributor with coil)?

The initial question is to vague to provide a reliable answer. I know of 3 different CD triggering mechanisms to fire the spark plugs.

I use to install, convert, standard ignition systems to CD in the 1970's in vehicles. They are/were very reliable. My only problem with the conversion kits was that when it failed, the failure usually left you in bad straights. I was stationed in Germany at the time and it could take weeks to get another kit. The other alternative was to change back to standard ignition system while you waited for parts.

Manufacturers usually have on line instruction manuals for their products.

If your question is in regards to electronic conversion, which I'm not sure about, the instructions with the Pertronix kit simply says that the spark plug gap may be increased to .035" if one chooses to. I don't generally mess with plug gap but will increase the gap the next time the plugs are out. The instructions do not mention plug wires and the system seems to work well with either type. If the wires are in decent condition, I leave them alone.
