I am going to disassemble my 154 pto. It was full of grease and now it makes a squealing noise when disengaged. Not sure what I will find and all i have is a parts manual TC 131. I looked on line but dont see any rebuild specs. I am sure there are others out there who have already done this. What tolorences do I need to look for? I have already used HamiltonBobs for parts. I have my second order in now. May be a third after the PTO open and inspect.

GSS-1408, Service Manual, section 8, has a few specs with pictures on how and where to measure.

If the PTO is squealing, guessing you have one or more dry bearings.

I got an early start on taking the PTO apart, here is what I found. PTO cluch shaft needle bearings locked up in end of shaft. input shaft with PTO clutch basket was not galled at all. Also a picture of the PTO cluch basket. Is the basket saposed to come off the shaft or is it pressed on?

I found the same problem with my PTO. Needle bearings shot. Replaced both sets.

Parts manual shows two each 1/4 x 5/16 set screws and woodruff key holding the updated cup to the drive shaft.

The basket will come off, although I wouldn't attempt unless it's absolutely necessary. There should be set screws on the other side of what is shown in your pic. You'll have to drive it off the shaft. There is a half moon key in there to keep it from spinning on the shaft.

One thing to look for is the "Spring Load" (#35 in the Parts Breakdown). The top photo shows a bad set, the bottom set is what you want yours to look like.

I left the basket on the shaft. no need to take it off. I didnt take the clutch pack apart. It seemed to work ok when it was engaged. Only made noise when disengaged.

I did use Hamiltonbobs for the needle bearings. Got them around 3:30 today. Already back in the house after reassembley and greasing. Sounds good to the ear, ready to mow.

Pete, my 154 PTO clutch pak always made a rattling sound when disengaged. There was no sound when engaged, and it never popped out or anything, so I left it. Was that your problem?

No my issue was with the needle bearing in the end of the PTO shaft. It had locked up and every time you disengaged the PTO it would make a baulling sound. Not a squeal or whine but a bauling kind of hawl. I had a hard time getting the old bearing out too.

A friend of mine rebuilt my PTO clutch about 10 years ago. It would have saved a lot of time if he would have just pulled a gun on me and asked for my wallet! Expensive repair when just about everything needs replacing.

I think it's just the metal discs between the clutch discs rattling because the clutch pack is disenguaged-meaning there is no pressure pulling everything tight together. You can get the noise to stop by pulling up on the enguage lever slightly. That takes all the play out of the clutch pack. I'm not saying drive it like that. Either have on or off.

Its just that IH thing!---the clutches are NOT made by IH, I would have to look but I think they are ryan? or cook or some name like that ,made in Chicago ILL.---and rattle when not under load, so dont worry about the little noise,---just use-um! thanks; sonny
