Possible Rear Seal Leak

My 184 may have developed a rear seal leak. It leaks at the rear of the motor, the drops are falling off near the left end of rockshaft. I removed the flywheel cover and all looks OK there and watched from there(at last oil change) as it idled and all was OK, then about 3 days later it has started it's drip again. I'll pull off the left side cover and look around some after MO deer season. I'm thinking that I'll change the clutch disc while it is apart. Any other ideas from anyone as to things to do while I'm down there? It has a 3 pt but I'm assuming I can get everything out the bottom with out having to break into any hydraulic lines????

Little tractor starts and runs great--I mostly use it to pull a Swisher Roughcut, carryall on the 3 pt, small boom, or a small trailer. It isn't used with a bellymower. I wanted folks ideas before I order parts--probably from Hamiltonbobs. Thanks

I believe you will have to break the HYD lines when you slide the engine forward to the drive shaft out.

Thanks for the reply. I ordered my parts from HamiltonBobs but it may a while before I actually get it done--I sometimes get lazy during hunting season...

If the hyd. pump is engine mounted like the 154/185's,--- then yes you will have to disconnect all lines to move the engine! thanks; sonny

You do not have to disconnect any hydraulic lines on the 184. You also do not have to move the engine. All can be done from beneath the tractor. You will have to drop the oil pan to get the retainer out. Pulling the oil pan also requires removal of the steering bracket up front.
Review the condition of the clutch disc and the driveshaft splines. They wear into a triangle point rather than a square. Also check out the wear on the pressure plate fingers from the throwout bearing.

Good luck with your oil leak. The rear seal leak is a nemesis of mine.

My book and the good folks at HamilitonBobs told me that I wouldn't have to move the motor or disconnect the hydraulics. I was wondering about having to remove the oil pan though--it looked as though it might have to come off. I try to research a lot before actually taking things apart although I sometime deviate from this practice and usually regret it.
