oil getting into radator please help

Postby flying4 » Wed Sep 11, 2013 9:14 pm

hello, i am new here and i need a little help. i am working on a cub 154 for a friend the other day he called me and said
that steam or smoke came from under the hood of his 154 while he was cutting grass. he said that he checked the water in the radator and he added water , and how there is oil in the water in the radator. i think that it has a blown head gasket.. is there anyway water could be getting the radator other than a blown head gasket? :?

Actually, a blown head gasket is your best bet. Otherwise, it's a cracked block. I'd flush the cooling system really good, then pull the head off and replace the head gasket. Spray the head bolts with Kroil for a couple of days before trying to loosen them. While the head is off, use a wire wheel to clean all the carbon off the pistons and head, and make sure to clean the mating surfaces really good. Watch the torque specs on the head, and you should be in good shape.

Make sure to use thread sealer on the new bolts going into the block. I've not had one off in a long time, but some of the bolts can go into the water jacket of the block, and this is a potential cause of leaking. If you search or ask on the regualr Cub forum, I'm sure someone has the correct bolt and product to use.
