Tire Size - Mud Tires?

Postby LFEngineering » Fri Aug 30, 2013 10:03 am

I've done some research and it seems finding replacements for my 13.6-16 original turf tires isn't the easiest task. Frankly my tires in are good shape and will most likely do the job for years to come, but I like options. From what I understand the 13.6-16 translates into a 13.6" wide tire mounted on a 16" (bead diameter) rim. The notation on the tire also says mounted on 11" rim, which I believe is the width. The tire also has a OD of about 38". If I have a 38" diameter tire that's 13.6" wide that is mounted on a 16" rim why can't I use a 38.5 x 11 - R16 truck tire? There are plenty of 38" mud tires out there that are designed for 16" rims. Didn't know if anyone else has tried this or knows a reason it wouldn't work.

You mention a "Mud Tire" but the turf tires do not do very well in mud. Ag tires may be more suitable.

You may want to take a look at b52c130's son's 184 in this post. These are probably the best looking new tires I have ever seen on a 184.

Here is some information from another forum regarding these tires:
The Rear Tires are: Firestone IMPLEMENT (Swather) Tires #342688, size 13.5 - 16.1, Tubeless, and were about $750 (or so) for the pair installed with new valves.

Hello,
The size of those tires.....16.1 is a little bigger than the 16 that is on my 154. Does that .1 affect anything when mounting on the original rims ????? Also, I found those Swather tires online at a place and they were $552 each.....that's somewhat more than $750 a pair. Where did you find them for that price ?????

I did message yogie, we'll see if he has any info. There's no doubt I could probably track down some AG's that would fit it's a question of availability and price. I can pick up a set of used mud tires around my area for couple cases of beer. If my lo-boy lives the life that my garden tractor did it will be primarily used for gathering firewood, moving trailers, unloading metal or moving stuff around the yard. I upgraded my garden tractor from turfs to Carlisle All Trail's and boy what a difference. I got the low impact that you'd see from a turf tire yet it could pull 8' logs in 4" of snow with no problems. Only about 5 times a year do I venture out in the snow to move stuff around, I don't think that justifies the purchase and instillation of wheel spacers and chains. Same story for the mud, only about a dozen times a year do I find myself out in the slippery stuff I have a feeling AG's would do more harm then good.

Another alternative is adapting a set of rubber tire chains I made for my truck a few years ago. At the time I drove 70 miles a day to work and back, buying a nice set of MT's would have been a waste of money. To fix the problem I cut up a 35" BFG All Terrain and made these rubber chains. They worked like paddle tires in the mud. I wouldn't use them on the road or at speeds over 20mph, but if you want slap on low impact traction it's hard to beat.

You would have to contact b52c130 for the distributor of those tires. Send him a PM.

From Yogie:
"As for the tires that are on your tractor now I've been in tire dealing for 34 years and can't remember ever seeing a set of 13.6 x16's before although we have had people call about them before.
I think you've found the only thing that can be done and that is to find something similar in size. I have a set of 900x16's on my David Bradley for pushing snow. Not what should be on there but a rougher tread that gets the job done.
I think your tires will work, you've done it before. Only thing to consider is power, do you have the power to turn the heavier tires that will be 6 or 8 ply ? If this is a mowing tractor you'll also have to adjust a few things to get the mower back level if need be.
Good luck, Yogie
Wish you were closer, we'd try several different things to fit your needs.
Sounds like you wo't be out much for trying, a couple changes and also a couple cases of beer."

I may just try to track down some tires and give it a shot. Another though I had was to pick up some steel wheels to fit the mud tires and just making wheel spacers to change the bolt pattern.

Seems there are plenty of options out there, enough to put my mind at ease in the event of a torn tire or total disappointment in traction.
