new rings in a 185
Is it absolutely necessary to pull the motor to put rings in my 185? I was hoping to get to the from the bottom and hate to pull the engine.

You can push the pistons up from the bottom and out the top to install new rings. If you have a mower deck installed, I'd definitely take it off first.

Ditto. If you need front or rear main seals I'd pull it anyway.

If the cylinder has a ridge, you may need to remove it first with a ridge reamer.

Re: new rings in a 185
It will most likely have a ridge in the cylinder, run a ridge reamer in it anyway. If there is any ridge it will break the top ring
